A-Level Film
A-Level Film
Film studies is the academic study of film. The course has been designed to develop your understanding of a diverse range of films from classics to the modern age. You will be exploring film practice within a national, global and historical context alongside the study of the critical approaches and their application within film. In addition you will study film as an aesthetic artform. There will also be the opportunity to develop your creative skills through filmmaking or screenwriting.
The course offers the opportunity to learn about film via both examined units and coursework. Across the two years you will study a wide range of cinema exploring key movements via 12 key films across key topic areas, as well as script, film and edit your own short film.
After studying all the key areas of film language in an induction period, you will then apply everything you have learnt to a range of periods of cinema. Here you will explore films from a social, cultural, political, historical and institutional perspective. Units include:
Classic Hollywood - A study of the golden age of cinema and the subsequent changes to the industry
Contemporary American Film - A study of spectatorship theory and how films are shaped by the ideologies that inform them
Contemporary British Film - A study of narrative and how directors use it to engage and challenge audiences
Global Film - A study of global cinema and how films from around the world are shaped by contextual issues
Documentary Film - A study of documentary techniques and how filmmakers use them to engage audiences
Silent Cinema - A study of the impact of cultural movements such as realism and expressionism on early cinema
Experimental Film - A study of alternative cinema and how it reinvents the way cinema is constructed

> A genuine passion for film
As a facilitating subject Film Studies sits comfortably alongside a range of subjects. It is a humanities subject and naturally complements other similar subjects including History, English Literature, English Language, Philosophy and Media Studies.
The course contains an element of creativity via the coursework and may be suited to those students wishing to further develop in this area or combine it with other creative courses. However please note this is not a practical course.
Many students go on to study film-related courses in Higher Education but the subject is also welcome as an entrance qualification for other degree level courses. The subject encourages analytical, written and practical skills appropriate for a career in the Film and Media Industries as well as in a range of other academic and vocational areas.
