There are two ways in which this course preparation work will be beneficial:
(a) It will help you to decide/confirm that this is the right course for you (i.e. if you enjoy thinking about these questions, that is a good sign; if you think they are stupid or boring that's a bad sign!)
(b) It will give you a chance to get a head start in your thinking on what we will be looking at over the two years. All four parts of the course are covered, and all of the questions are ones that we will consider on the course itself.
TASK: We'd like you to think about, perhaps discuss (with friends/family), and then give your own answer to a series of philosophical questions.
INSTRUCTIONS: Please answer all of the questions below.
For Qs 1-4: We want you to think about what your views are coming into the course. If you don’t understand the question, don’t worry, just say so or write about why it is unclear to you. If you have a view on it, explain it and try to justify it. You can answer these just by thinking about them yourself and that is absolutely fine (we want you to do your own thinking!). However, if you also want to do some research of your own into what people say about these issues that is fine too, but not expected. There is no need to write an essay on each, just your thoughts with reasons (aim for around 200 words per question).
For the “TERM” question: Use a good source (e.g. an online philosophy encyclopedia like the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).
