Task 1
Analysis and evaluation of performances and rehearsals
run throughout the Music Performance course and are
important skills to develop.
With this in mind, select a band of your choosing and
watch a live performance from early in their career.
Whilst you are watching, simply take notes under
the following headings:
Communication
(type, e.g. verbal, physical, musical; with band members; with audience)
Stage presentation
(image e.g. costume where appropriate, stage make-up; stage
presence and awareness; use of space e.g. movement, placing
of equipment; sight lines)
Musical competency
(Intonation; instrumental tuning; pitching during performance; tightness; tempo; handling of section changes; beginnings and endings; technical proficiency; critical listening and response to ensemble requirements e.g. balance, sensitivity and dynamics)
If you struggle to come up with a band of your own then watch this performance of Wolf Alice in 2012
Task 2
Now watch a more recent live performance from the same band and compare how the two performances differ. How do the two performances vary in terms of how the musicians interact both musically, verbally and physically during the performance?
If you watched the Wolf Alice video in Task 1 then compare it with this more recent performance from 2018
Task 3 (extra, optional task)
Have you been to a festival before? If so, what band stood out to you as the most entertaining? Give your reasons for this. What do you feel are the most important elements of a live performance?
