About the course
About the course
We follow the OCR A level specification for Computer science (H446). The full specification can be found online. Further information can be found in the subject content clarification guide.
You will have three lessons of computer science per week totalling 4.5 hours. In addition, you will be set 4.5 hours of private study per week (work to complete independently) every Friday, due the following Friday. Private study is set and submitted on Google Classroom. Every half term you will have a formal assessment based on all content covered to date.
The course website, which you will have access to when you have enrolled, shows the schedule of lessons for the entire course and includes links to lesson slides and resources for every lesson. The first part of the course (roughly half a term) is spent developing your programming skills and covering some of the basic computing theory. You will use Java to consolidate programming theory. You will then start to build practical skills in JavaScript in order to prepare for coursework. Since JavaScript, HTML and CSS are on the specification, these a good to use in coursework. Your coursework project is worth 20% of the final A level and will be started in Year 1 and finished by December of Year 2. All the marks for the coursework are based on the write up - around 100 pages or more!
