Farming in the 1850s and 1930s was much different than it is today. For one thing, the farming machines today are much more advanced and do a lot more of the physical work for farmers. In the 1850 nearly everyone farmed, today, only 2% of the U.S. population farms. But that's okay because technology is helping them grow food and fiber for clothing for the rest of us who don't farm.
