Mandatory Requirements
There are mandatory requirements that must be completed. At least 1 hour is needed in each of the following areas:
Positive Behavioral Intervention Strategies (PBIS)
Accommodations and modifications
Reading preparation
Mental illness in children
Suicide prevention
English Language learners best practices
Cultural heritage and contemporary contributions of American Indians, with particular emphasis on Minnesota Tribal Nations
Cultural competency (Please note that a MN approved state workshop or 8 CEU hours from a variety of experiences are required to meet this requirement.)
***Cultural Competency Training must include the following elements in a format fostering self-reflection and discussion where the focus is on deepening the teacher’s own frames of reference, potential bias in these frames, and the impact of these frames on students, students’ families, and the school communities:
o Racial, cultural, and socioeconomic groups;
o American Indian and Alaskan native students;
o Religious diversity;
o Gender identity, including transgender students;
o Sexual orientation;
o Language diversity;
o Individuals with disabilities and mental health concerns; and
o Systemic racism.
Clock Hour Categories
A. Relevant College and University Courses
1 Semester credit = 24 clock hours 1 Quarter credit = 16 clock hours
Required documentation: *Unofficial transcript required
B. Out of District Educational Workshops, Conferences, Seminars or Lectures in Areas Appropriate to License
Required documentation: Certificate of participation signed by the presenter or workshop sponsor indicating the date and number of hours. Any mandatory requirements that are being met by the experience need to be indicated on the certificate. Only actual hours of participation earn clock hours, excluding travel time, meals or breaks, or preparation time.
C. In - District Inservice and Staff Development Activities
Required documentation: Certificate of participation signed by the presenter or workshop sponsor indicating the date and number of hours. Any mandatory requirements that are being met by the experience need to be indicated on the certificate. Only actual hours of participation earn clock hours, excluding travel time, meals or breaks, or preparation time.
D. Curriculum Development at the district, state or national level
Required documentation: District Curriculum Director's certificate of dates and hours. This is for district-sponsored curriculum projects. Lesson plans and materials created for daily personal classroom use do not earn clock hours.
E. Formal Peer Coaching or Mentorship Program
Required documentation: Certificate signed by director of mentor program. (Maximum CEUs allowed in a 5 year period: 20 clock hours for full year of formal mentoring of a new teacher)
F. Professional Service
Supervision of a Student Teacher or Intern 1 semester = 24 clock hours, 1 quarter = 16 hours. Required documentation: Written statement of administrator or college representative responsible for the student teaching experience. (Maximum of 30 hours in a 5 year period)
National, State and Local Committees Involved with licensure, teacher education or professional standards. Required documentation: written statement signed by the committee chairperson or agency representative
Participation in National, Regional, or State Accreditation Required documentation: written statement of committee chairperson or agency representative
G. Leadership Experiences (Maximum of 30 clock hours in a 5 year period)
Leadership in Developing New or Broader Skills and Sensitivities to the School, Community or Profession. Required documentation: written statement of the director of the agency or organization. Note: Activities must be leadership, beyond membership or participation
Publication of Professional Articles in a Professional Journal. Required documentation: Copy of article and a summary of the experience. Note: A publication is defined as being printed by a recognized publishing company or a recognized professional journal. Locally produced materials will not qualify for clock hours.
Volunteer Work in Professional Organizations in Area of Licensure. Required documentation: Written statement of official representative of the organization. Note: Activities must be leadership, beyond membership or participation.
H. Enhancing Understanding of Diverse Educational Settings (Maximum of 30 clock hours in a 5 year period)
Working with Students of Another Age, Ability, or Culture. Required documentation: Written statement of administrator of the educational agency for which the teaching was done.
Observation Visits to Schools and Related Business and Industry. Required documentation: Written statement signed by an official representative of the school, business or industry visited.
I. Travel or Work Experience (Pre-approval required)
Travel to Improve Instructional Capabilities in Area of Licensure. 1 week = 10 clock hours. Required documentation: Detailed trip itinerary, educational objectives, summary of experience and relevance to teaching assignment. (Maximum of 30 clock hours in a 5 year period)
Work Experience in Business or Industry Related to Field of Licensure. 1 week = 10 clock hours. Required documentation: A written statement signed by the employer. (Maximum of 30 clock hours in a 5 year period)
Renewing a Teaching License
When renewing a teaching license there are different requirements for the different Tiered licenses:
Tier 1 and 2 licenses do NOT need to submit CEU certificates. They must complete the mental illness, suicide prevention and cultural competency mandatory requirements.
Tier 3 licenses need to submit 75 CEU hours and the mandatory requirements.
Tier 4 licenses need to submit 125 CEU hours and the mandatory requirements.
Moving from a Tier 3 License to a Tier 4 License
Submit 75 CEU hours and the mandatory requirements to the Continuing Education Committee
Complete 3 years of teaching experience (teaching experience needs to be verified by the district office or administration)
Complete the paper application and mail to PELSB.

Renewing an Administrative License
Please send all 125 CEU hours to Amy Bouma at Lincoln Elementary. Be sure to include your file folder number with your clock hours. There is no application to fill out.
Faribault Public Schools Teachers

If you are ready to renew your teaching license, then complete the CEU application. Be sure to scan your CEUs and upload them using Google Drive. Picture attachments do not open in Vector.
If you are leaving the district then send an email to the Continuing Education Committee requesting that your Vector CEUs get transferred to your PELSB online account.

Nonpublic Schools Teachers
Teachers that live or work in Faribault that do not work for the public school may submit their Continuing Education Units to the Faribault Public Schools Continuing Education Committee to be processed. Please fill out the CEU application below. The CEUs will be processed and you will be notified once they are completed.
