Legendborn by Tracy Deonn came out in September 2020 and has become a spectacle on different social media platforms. Many members of BookTok, or a community of TikTokers who read, write, and share books amongst one another, spread Legendborn and helped it gain traction and sales.
Legendborn is written from the perspective of Briana (Bree) Matthews, a young woman of color who just tragically lost her mother to a hit-and-run car accident. The story opens with Bree and her best friend, Alice Chen (a Taiwanese-American), at a party in the woods on their first day at her mother's alma mater, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). Later that night, after meeting Selwyn (Sel) Kane and seeing something she should not have, she discovers that her mother's death might not have been what it seemed. After getting in trouble with the Dean and being assigned a peer mentor, Nicholas (Nick) Davis, she finds herself in the world of the Legendborn. The Legendborn are the descendants of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, who have special abilities due to their ancestry and use it to fight shadowborn (demons). As she fights to discover the truth about what happened to her mother, Bree finds herself in a battle not only with shadowborn monsters, but with racism, ancestry, and love.
