“I can’t do this homework. I don’t understand math.”
“I can’t do this homework yet. I don’t understand how to make sense of this math problem.”
Do either of these statements sound like something your child would say? Which one? How your child takes on challenges isn’t just about being motivated or resilient. It may be the result of having what’s known as a growth mindset. A mindset describes how we face challenges and setbacks. People with a growth mindset believe their abilities can improve over time. On the other hand, people with a fixed mindset think their abilities are set in stone or can’t change, no matter how hard they try. Research helps us understand how to teach growth mindset to kids and help them find meaning in failure, which means your child can develop a growth mindset too! Discover the power of “yet”!
What is SEL?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

SEL for High School Students (Week #4): Time management (part 2)
Purpose: Students practice prioritizing tasks and understand the importance of schedules.
Reflection: Ask yourself, “why do we use a calendar or planner?”
It is important to create systems that will facilitate effective time management. People without effective systems often waste time looking for items such as assignments, phone numbers, and so on. In order to prioritize, you must consider all of your tasks.
Activity 1: Write down all of your “to-do” tasks for today, and number each task according to how important the task is to you with number one being the most important. Include everything, including extracurricular activities, phone calls, household chores, and homework assignments
Activity 2: Then, use your to-do list to create your plan for today or for the week using the “Daily Planner Worksheet” or a similar tool you may already be familiar with. Just remember that the task you have identified most important should be completed first, even if the other tasks are more appealing.
20 Quick Tips for Time Management
Challenge: I challenge each of you to try out a scheduling system for at least three weeks. You will find that this generally helps keep you on track. You have many options about the type of planner to use, and that the samples you provided are only suggestions.
