She feels fortunate to have taught in the Benjamin Cosor Elementary School for 27 years (grades 4, 3, and 5) until retiring in 2001. She says, “They were the most gratifying years of my life. Having the opportunity to be supportive in the academic and emotional growth of young and impressionable students was a gift to me.”

Ms. Kates was one of the first parent volunteers in the elementary school starting in 1979, and she has worked closely with many teachers over the years.
