All rising sophomores taking ELA II will read one nonfiction article to prepare them to study argument and ethics of public health in the fall:
Read and annotate Rob Stein's article "Proposed Treatment to Fix Genetic Diseases Raises Ethical Issues."
Complete the "comprehension check" multiple choice questions.
Complete the "short answer" questions in no less than 1-2 paragraphs each.
Additionally, we would like to encourage every student to read a book of choice over the summer. This will be extra credit for Term 1.
Students may select ANY BOOK within the appropriate grade span for grades 9-12. We have included some recommended titles below for your consideration, but really any book will do!
During the summer, students should complete a MOMENTS SHEET assignment once they have finished reading their chosen book.
Many titles are available in our BMC Durfee High School SORA digital library, which also can be accessed via cellphone if needed. Also, if a student prefers a hard copy of the book, we recommend visiting our local bookstores and libraries as we have notified them about the titles we have recommended this year as well.
Here are some titles we recommend:
One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus
Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon
True Notebooks: A Writer’s Year at Juvenile Hall by Mark Salzman
KICKS: The Great American Story of Sneakers by Nicholas Smith
