This Year in the LLC

There were several activities that occurred inside and outside of the LLC as the school year comes to a close, the first being a presentation teaching students about the importance of microaggressions. Students learned about taking responsibility for helping create a climate that promotes sensitivity, respect, and tolerance for differences. This event was sponsored by the Unity Coalition as part of the No Place For Hate initiative sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League. As the weather has improved, we have had several collaborations with teachers that have resulted in memorable opportunities for students. On May 12th, Juniors from Mr. DaCosta's US History course collaborated with LMS Mr. Staton on a lesson on the impact of religion on social justice movements. Students visited Congregation Beth El, St Anthony of Padua Parish, Greenfield Hill Congregational Church, Bridgeport Islamic Community Center, and the Tibetan Buddhist Center For Universal Peace, where they were able to ask insightful questions about not only the role of religion, but the differences between religion and faith.

The next week students from both American Studies courses participated in an amazing culminating activity sponsored by Watson Adventures. Students participated in two separate scavenger hunts related to historical sites in NYC; the High Line/Meatpacking District along the Hudson River, and Greenwich Village/New York University starting at Washington Park. LMS Mr. Staton served as one of the "coaches" for one of the teams, and they brought home scavenger hunt gold!!
