Strategies for Understanding Language Structure, Verbal Reasoning, and Literary Knowledge
Activities to Teach Syntax and Semantics for 4th-8th Grade
1. Daily proofreading activities-Students correct sentences to use the correct verb tense, complete sentences, appropriate capitalization, and punctuation.
2. Morphology Flashcards-Students study the meanings of prefixes and suffixes to help define vocabulary. Students learn to look up Latin and Greek base words to decode the meaning of words.
Activities to Teach Figurative Language for 4th-8th Grade
1. Literal vs. Figurative Meaning Posters-Students are assigned to make a poster demonstrating the literal meaning on one half and the figurative meaning on the other half. Examples (That Was a Piece of Cake, You Look Like a Million Bucks, It’s Raining Cats and Dogs, etc.)
2. Research Brand Lyrics-Students are assigned to find figurative language in brand slogans (Taste the Rainbow, Give Me a Break, etc.)
Activities to Teach Print Concepts and Text Types for 4th-8th Grade
1. Sentence Puzzles-Write a sentence on a sentence strip, then cut each word apart. Have students reassemble the sentence focusing on word order and spacing.
2. Book Scavenger Hunt-Have students go on a scavenger hunt to find five examples of literary text and expository text in the classroom or school library.
