This year, the European Young Chemists’ Network (EYCN) will host the fifth edition of its Photochimica photo competition in collaboration with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). Young chemists (below 35 years old) are invited to send in their creative photos on the theme
"Elements in Chemistry"
The principal purpose of this competition is to encourage young chemists to get creative in the field of chemistry. In doing this, we hope that they will inspire others to think and talk about science in new and different ways and illustrate in the importance of chemistry in our lives.
The Photochimica photo competition was started by the European Young Chemists' Network (EYCN) in 2016 in order to promote chemistry through visual arts and to show the presence of chemistry in our daily lives (Theme: "Chemistry is Everywhere"). The competition garnered significant attention and over 70 submission from a broad range of countries. Thus, a second edition was organised in the subsequent year, which adressed the theme "Radioactivity" in honor of the 150th birthday of Marie Skłodowska Curie, a pioneer of radioactivity. The contest again attracted a numerous of submissions from over ten countries. Photos from this competition were also exhibitied at the Medicina-Scientia-Cultura conference celebrating the 150th birthday of Marie Skłodowska Curie taking place in Warsaw, Poland in Late 2017. In these first two editions, submissions were strictly separated into photography and (scientific) measurement pictures, which is not the case anymore to more freely compare the various creative approaches.
From 2020 onward, the competition has been hosted together with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). The collaboration started with the 3rd edition of the Photochimica competition on "Sustainable Development", which culminated in the annoucement of the winners on April 22, 2020, Earth Day. Glynn Skerratt, from the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Environmental Chemistry Group committee, one of the judges, commended the particapants and commented: “Photochimica has shown us how complex, tactile, and – more than anything – beautiful chemistry can be, and how it spans such a wide range of rewarding and important careers." For the first time, the top 12 photos were used to create a table calendar, that was distributed to winners, society volunteers, and on conferences. For the theme of the fourth edition of Photochimica, we've gone back to the roots: "Chemistry in Everyday Life" to again showcase the relevance of chemistry in our modern world and again, the two networks and the judges were delighted to see how creative and relevant the entries received were.
In 2024, the fifth edition of the contest sets out to continue this tradition and you can be a part of this by submitting your photos ...
