International Director - André Gaspar

André is very excited to join GLA for his third consecutive Summer Growing up his dream was to explore the world. With a deep passion for Wildlife, and a determination to protect the natural world, André later decided to become a Conservationist. After graduating with a BSc in Biology, he decided it was time to follow his dream. His adventurous spirit took him to some of the most remote places around the Globe. During that time André worked as a Volunteer, Research Assistant, Wildlife Guide or Environmental Educator in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. He currently splits his time working with GLA and as an Outdoor Instructor in Korea. Rock climbing, trekking, kayaking and scuba diving are some of his other passions in Life. He just love spending time outside!

Local Director - Urbano Huayna Arredondo

Urbano Huayna Arredondo was born in Apurimac and spent most of his childhood in his hometown, grazing his animals and experiencing close terrorism times that left a sad, violent impact on his community.

At the age of 12, he moved to a bigger city like Cusco, looking for opportunities where he could finish his studies in Tourism. At the age of 24, he started working as a tour guide and decided to lead hikes through the mountains. His first language is Quechua, and he feels huge gratitude for being able to speak it as he thinks it is an important resource to make friends in the mountains with the locals. He finds this job very rewarding as it provides him with opportunities to reach new destinations and learn more. He is excited to meet our GLA students next summer!

GLA Staffing - Roles

GLA staff are native to the host country and international, usually from the US, Canada or Europe. All staff are highly qualified adults with college degrees. Most of our staff are educators and/or working professionals with higher degrees of education. All of our staff have extensive experience working with teenage students, international programs and/or a specific knowledge of the program country.

GLA staff consists of a local program director, someone from the host country with extensive experience working with international students and also an international program director, someone from the west with extensive global experience working with this age group, who together bridge any cultural differences. Mentors work with the students on a day to day basis. Staff ages usually range between 25 – 35 years old. In addition, we maintain a student to staff ratio of 6:1.
