FAQ

What is required of a tutor?

In order to become a tutor an interested volunteer must:

    • Complete a volunteer application
    • Complete Cross Cultural Training
    • Complete a NNC Training
    • Submit monthly reports

Tutors needs not have teaching or ESL experience in order to succeed here! We ask that interested volunteers simply have patience, a teachable spirit and is interested in building a relationship with their refugee student.

What is the time commitment?

We ask NNC tutors meet with their student once a week for four months. NNC tutors will also be required to submit a monthly report at the end of every calendar month. These reports should take no longer than 10 minutes.

Where is this program offered?

New Neighbor Conversations is currently only offered in DuPage County.

What training is required?

Two training sessions. Our standard Cross Cultural Training which we require for New Neighbor and for New Neighbor Conversations Program. There is also a specific training designed for those entering the New Neighbor Conversation program

What does an average session look like?

There is no such thing as an average session, especially when working in refugee ministry. You never know where conversation may lead you or what may pique your students interest. NNC training will help give you the tools and techniques to help lead through a session, but as long as conversation is happening with your student than you are being successful. To give you an idea of what may be covered here is a loose outline.

  • Warm up: recapping last lesson, going over homework
  • Talking through a few pages of the Oxford Picture Dictionary - choosing a unit or topic that is of interest to the student.
  • Practicing reading a story in the local paragraph. Underline words that your student stumbles on and review them once they have made it through the story.
