What is Going On in Science?
In 5th Grade Science, we are reviewing for the Science EOG:
Standard and Objectives:
LS.5.3 Understand some characteristics of an organism are inherited and other
characteristics are acquired.
Students know examples of instincts (e.g., nest building, living in groups,
swimming upstream to spawn, dog shaking when wet, web making by spiders,
living in groups, cocoon making by moths, bees construct hexagonal cells,
squirrels storing food for winter, getting goosebumps).
Students know examples of learned behaviors (e.g. building a better nest, doing
pet tricks, parrots talking, prairie dogs communicating danger to their group,
playing a game, using eating utensils, tying shoes).
Students explain the difference between an instinct and a learned behavior.

Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe, but our final week of 5th grade is here! As we wrap up the school year, we have a fun and exciting week planned full of engaging, interactive learning activities.
We’ll be heading to SkyZone for our field trip, testing our geography skills in paired team competitions on world countries, cities, rivers, mountains, and lakes, and playing USA 50 State Bingo. We’ll also celebrate together at our end-of-year 5th grade picnic!
It’s a week to have fun, make memories, and keep learning right to the end. Thank you for a fantastic year!
Warmly,
Mr. Porlides

🎉 The Final Countdown – Summer’s Almost Here! ☀️
Parent Newsletter – Week of June 2, 2025
Dear Parents and Families,
We did it!!! The long-awaited End-of-Grade (EOG) assessments are officially behind us, and every student showed up and gave it their very best. Hooray! 🎉 I’ve had the pleasure of congratulating all our Flying Lions—not just for their scores, but for their effort, determination, and positive attitudes throughout the testing season.
Now, with less than 6 days left in the school year, excitement is in the air! I’m sure students are already counting down to summer break—and who can blame them?
Whatever your family has planned this summer—whether it's traveling, relaxing, exploring, or just soaking in some sunshine—I wish you safe journeys and plenty of fun-filled, restful moments. 🌴🌞
As you enjoy summer adventures, I encourage students to keep their minds active:
Read, Read, Read! Whether it's a favorite chapter book, comic, or nonfiction, reading helps build vocabulary, strengthens comprehension, and fosters confidence.
Explore Context Clues & Inference: Encourage your child to think beyond the page—what's the author hinting at? What can we figure out from what we already know?
Write for Fun: A paragraph—or three! Writing helps students connect ideas, retain what they’ve learned, and express themselves creatively.
Even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference.
June 2, 2025 – 🎈 SKY ZONE Field Trip
A day of bouncing, laughter, and energy! Please ensure students wear comfortable clothing and socks for jumping.
June 5, 2025 – 🎉 Fifth Grade Picnic
Our chance to celebrate a wonderful year together. Food, and great memories await!
Thank you for your continued support throughout this amazing school year. I am so proud of all we’ve accomplished together. Wishing each of you a joyful, safe, and sunshine-filled summer! 🌈📖✏️
