Why We Created the Map
Why We Created the Map
Purpose and Significance
On March 21, 2025, multiple wildfires erupted in Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. Fueled by strong winds, the fires have rapidly spread to Andong, Yeongyang, and other areas across the province. Despite continuous firefighting efforts day and night, the blazes persist, resulting in significant casualties and extensive property damage. What began as a natural disaster has escalated into a crisis, disrupting the daily lives and livelihoods of countless residents.
In response to this emergency, we—undergraduate students majoring in Geography Education from the department of Social Studies Education at Ewha Womans University’s College of Education—developed the ‘Wildfire Evacuation Shelter Guide Map’ to assist residents in identifying safe evacuation routes and minimizing potential harm.
This map was created using Google Maps, with data sourced from emergency alerts issued by the National Disaster and Safety Portal. We have personally verified and categorized designated evacuation centers by region, focusing on Andong-si, Yeongyang-gun, and Cheongsong-gun in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which are currently experiencing severe wildfire conditions.
We hope that the "Wildfire Evacuation Shelter Guide Map" serves as a valuable resource, enabling families to swiftly locate safe shelter and reunite with their loved ones—restoring the warmth and tranquility of their cherished spring days.
