The East Whittier City School District McKinney-Vento program is designed to assist our Families in Transition overcome barriers of immediate enrollment, transportation to school of origin, and achieve school stability. Mckinney-Vento legislation that ensures children and youth experiencing homelessness have full and equal access to an appropriate public education and that they experience success in school. The program protects children who are living in transitional housing situations and states that any student lacking a fixed, regular or adequate place to live is eligible for this program.

Sharing housing with other persons due to loss of housing or economic hardship. Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, sheds, or camping grounds due to lack of alternative adequate accommodations. Unaccompanied child or youth who is not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian. Families living in emergency or transitional shelters. Migratory families who qualified as homeless because they are living in the circumstances described.

Student live under any of these conditions:

• Living in a shelter (family, youth or domestic violence shelter or transitional living program)

• Living in a motel / hotel

• Living in a house or apartment with more than one family because of economic hardship or loss

• Living in an abandoned building, in a car, at a campground or on the street

• Living in substandard housing (without electricity, heat or water)

• Living with friends or family because you are a runaway or unaccompanied youth

Services Offered

The EWCSD Family In Transition Program, families can receive the supports and services needed to overcome barriers to educational access.

• School Enrollment assistance as needed

• Access to technology (chromebook / hotspot) as needed

• Referrals to Before / After School programs

• Basic Needs (hygine, nonperishable food, diapers, etc.) upon request

• Backpacks and school supplies upon request

• Free and reduced lunch program

• Tutoring Referrals

• Transportation assistance as needed
