At this time, EWCSD will offer parent options of either in-person (face-to-face) instruction or virtual academy (at-home learning) beginning January 11, 2021.
Parents must select one of the two options for their child(ren). The survey choice is binding through the end of the grading cycle.
To take the survey, parents will need the following information:
Your child’s first and last name as it appears in Aeries Parent Portal
Your child’s date of birth (mm/dd/yyyy)
Your child’s current grade level
Your child’s current school
If available, your child's school ID (the 8-9 digit number that your child uses to login to their chromebook). Not required.
How it works
The Virtual Academy will look like the program we are currently offering in the district. During the school day teachers will provide direct instruction through an online platform. Students will also complete assignments and projects independently, at the direction of their teacher. They will have access to teacher office hours, small group virtual tutoring and support, and online materials. Attendance will be taken.
If you choose the Virtual Academy model for your child and they receive special education supports and/or services (Specialized Academic Instruction, DIS counseling, Speech and Language Services, Occupational Therapy, Adaptive PE, etc.) or general education supports and/or services (Counseling, Intervention, Section 504), the supports and/or services will still be provided through an online platform.
Schedule
The model will follow the current distance learning schedule for both elementary and middle school students.
Opting-in
Parents selecting this option must remain with the distance learning model through the end of a grading cycle. At that time, parents can opt to switch to the on-campus (face-to-face) learning model. Parents must notify their child’s school if they want to change options for the start of the next grading cycle. Parents may continue to participate in the distance learning model until otherwise notified.
How it works
Based on the information from the Los Angeles Department of Public Health to date, we are on track to open for in-person instruction on January 11, 2021. For all school levels, safety is a top priority. Because limiting the number of people in the school at one time is a critical factor in controlling the spread of COVID-19, a hybrid attendance schedule will be used to allow for social distancing.
In this model, learning happens in a traditional classroom setting at least two days a week with a teacher on campus using all safety guidelines in place included in the Health and Safety Handbook. The remaining days of the week students will participate in distance (at-home) learning and independently, at the direction of their teacher.
Opting-in
Parents selecting this option must remain with the hybrid in-person model through the end of a grading cycle. Parents must notify their child’s school if they want to change options for the start of the next grading cycle.
If you have multiple children in the East Whittier City School District, you will need to complete a form for EACH child. The deadline to complete and submit this survey is November 13, 2020 by 5:00pm. If you do not complete this new survey, your child will automatically be enrolled in the "virtual academy" according to the grade level of your child. Parents will be able to change their selection at the end of the grading period (trimester/quarter).
EWCSD prides itself on the exemplary teaching staff across the district and is committed to providing a robust program across all instructional models. At this time we ask that you do not base your decision on whether or not your child will have the same teacher. EWCSD will do all that is possible to prevent any disruptions or changes in classroom assignments , but we cannot guarantee that your child will be placed with their current teacher with either available option.
