Hydraulics refers to the process of using liquids as a source of mechanical energy. We can use this energy to create electricity at a lower cost and high efficiency.
A basic hydraulic system that uses the flow of water to spin a prop. This prop can be of many types, and sizes. Each type of prop has a different efficiency and purpose.
The Hoover Dam- One of the largest hydroelectric dams in the world. Hydro dams convert the flow of water from a river into usable electricity. We want to use hydraulics to convert water runoff from a gutter into electricity.
This is how an average hydro turbine works. Water flows in from the gate, rotating the turbine itself. This then rotates a shaft and rotor, generating mechanical energy. The electrons then separate with friction and become electricity.
While we want to create a miniaturized hydro turbine that can fit in a downspout, hydro turbines are commonly used for large-scale purposes. An example of this is hydroelectric dams. They use the natural flow of a river to harness electricity using hydro turbines. Unlike hydroelectric dams that are expensive and require a large amount of space, our proposed design is small and cheap to manufacture.
