Data is collected and used to help teachers tailor instruction to each child, and monitor student growth and progress from year to year. During 3rd grade, the Indiana Department of Education begins to recognize this data "officially" as our students learn and grow. It is important that our Mustangs do well on these assessments, as this is the first time the state monitors our Mustang's progress. High stakes assessments that we participate in are explained below.
ILEARN is the high stakes test that replaced ISTEP in 2019. It includes a variety of question types including essay, short answer and multiple choice. It covers Reading, Language Arts and Mathematics.
The testing window is April 13-May 8, 2026.
New in the 24-25 school year, we will take ILEARN checkpoints to monitor progress and test readiness throughout the school year.
Checkpoint 1: Sept. 15- Nov. 14, 2025
Checkpoint 2: Nov. 17 Feb. 6, 2026
Checkpoint 3: Feb. 9- April 10, 2026
Only students that did not pass IREAD–3 in second grade participate in this exam. It evaluates wheter children can read at the 3rd grade leve. This high-stakes test will determine if a child is eligable to advance on to 4th grde. The test is taken online, and only covers Reading. It is mostly multiple choice with some short answer selections.
The testing window is March 3-13, 2026.
To assess mastery and determine grades, informal assessments will also be given on a regular basis deemed appropriate by the classroom teacher and third grade team.
These may include: running records, progress monitoring, anecdotal notes, checklists, conferences, unit tests, reading response notebook, and rubrics.
