The overall approach at Helfrich Park STEM Academy is to meet the district’s core curriculum objectives while working in conjunction to meet the STEM curriculum needs. The purpose of the science curriculum is to develop meaningful activities and lessons that connect to our community opportunities. The Berry Global project completed by our sixth graders, is a great example that can be seen throughout this document.
In science classes, teachers have integrated standards-based lessons by using the scientific method, engineering design process, and incorporating the process standards throughout the year. With our school district developing curriculum maps that are not totally dedicated to STEM, the teachers at Helfrich Park have to develop these lessons during their PLC time and include other curriculum areas during the process. We are very fortunate to have Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) for every teacher that last forty minutes each day.
The computer science program at Helfrich has grown over the years. It has evolved and now uses the Project Lead the Way curriculum to meet the changing needs of the students. Recently, we have added a coding curriculum for students.
Even the fine arts teachers get involved at Helfrich by incorporating math into their curriculum. They discuss measurement when learning about measures on a piece of music. During class, students also discuss fractions while learning about rhythm, and basic computation is required when determining the beat of notes, the beats per measure, and the time signature of a song.
Curriculum Integration
At Helfrich Park, teachers and the school district have researched and made researched-based decisions that are the best for the students and the STEM program. All grade levels have created lesson plans that align with the state curriculum maps for all subjects with a focus on STEM.
1). All Helfrich Park teachers have created unit and lesson plans for each quarter of the school year. These plans are focused on all subject areas and have a STEM component to them.
2). All math, science and technology teachers focus on evidence-based curriculum that focuses on STEM.
1). STEM has been implemented and supported through all curriculum areas at Helfrich Park Stem Academy
1). Helfrich Park added digital communication which became computer science in 2018
2). Computer science course list
3). Course Enrollment
4). Master schedule link
Helfrich Park has multiple community partners that focus on building the skills of our students to prepare them for the workforce of southern Indiana. Each grade level at Helfrich Park has a specific focus that includes a STEM project for the school year.
1). The students at Helfrich Park are given the opportunity for STEM programs through courses offered or after school clubs.
2). Helfrich Park STEM Academy 2022-2023 school schedule.
3). Students of all demographics will participate fully in the STEM program.
4). Helfrich Park allows all students to participate in the Project Lead the Way and Computer Technology classes.
5). At Helfrich Park, we follow the EVSC district’s curriculum maps and make adjustments to meet the expectations of a STEM school.
1). Helfrich Park teachers have created a variety of assessments that focuses on STEM activities.
2). At Helfrich, we are fortunate to have community partners that meet and give our students meaningful feedback.
3). Rubrics that are focused on STEM activities are attached.
