Insect Taxonomy Workshop

Insects are the most diverse group of organisms and are found in almost every conceivable habitat on planet earth. They create the biological foundation for all terrestrial ecosystems. They cycle nutrients, pollinate plants, disperse seeds, maintain soil structure and fertility, control populations of other organisms, and provide a major food source for other taxa.

Correct identification of these crawly creatures is a prerequisite before using them as model organisms by the researchers. The taxonomy workshop will expose participants to insect classification and its importance, various insect orders and their principal features for identification. The course will also cover important areas such as insect behaviour, communication, phylogeny, and arthropod relations. The practical aspect of the course will expose students to procedures of insect collection and preservation, while laboratory practicals will deal with identification.

Note: This is a satellite program to the main conference, and participants who desire to take part in it must register separately.
