We recognize that our highly capable students have unique and complex needs to support their excitement for learning and creativity. To provide them with opportunities to engage in a variety of intellectually stimulating activities we are offering after school enrichment experiences. These experiences will emphasize a blend of project based learning, STEM, critical thinking, collaborative problem solving and organization.
The activities shown below are for elementary students. Middle and high school students have a variety of clubs available to them at their buildings that support a diverse set of intellectual and physical interests.
Speed puzzling is a twist on completing jigsaw puzzles, where the focus is not only on completing the puzzle but also on doing it as quickly as possible. Students can work solo, in pairs or with a team.
Some of the intellectual benefits of jigsaw puzzling are:
Improved memory
Better visual-spatial reasoning
Increased creativity
Better problem-solving skills
Increased mental speed
Better pattern recognition
This activity will be offered at available schools October-December
Students compete individually and in teams in a regional math competition. This competition will include other teams from EPS along with teams from school districts in Clark County
Teams will meet prior to the competition to dig into advanced math concepts and practice in the competition format.
Sessions will be offered at available schools approximately January-February
This project-based learning competition presents students with a real-world problem or context and challenges them to deliver a solution. This experience teaches students how to develop and use their natural creativity to become problem solvers. Students apply what they learn and combine it with their interests and passions to solve a unique, open-ended problem. It emphasizes teamwork, budgeting, time management, public speaking, and so much more. Teams of up to 6 students will design a solution to a problem they select from the options presented to them. Solutions will be presented in a showcase evening event with teams from around the district.
This activity will be offered at available schools February-April
