BVMS Dance Elective:
Yearlong Beginning / Intermediate Dance
A year-long dance class offers a holistic, enriching and fun experience that goes beyond just learning steps and routines. It nurtures creativity, discipline, cultural awareness, and a lifelong passion for dance, empowering students to express themselves through the universal language of movement. Dance curriculum may entail the following:
Foundations and Technique: The beginning of the year focuses on building a strong foundation in dance technique. Students learn the fundamentals of body alignment, posture, balance, and coordination. Class will include exercises to improve flexibility, strength, and stamina, essential for mastering more advanced movements.
Exploration of Styles: Throughout the year, students explore a diverse range of dance styles, that could include; ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, tap, and cultural dances such as salsa, African, or Bollywood. Each style is introduced gradually, allowing students to understand its unique movement vocabulary, musicality, and cultural context.
Cultural and Historical Context: Beyond just learning the steps, students delve into the cultural and historical context of each dance style. They study the origins, traditions, and significance of different dance forms, gaining a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of global dance heritage.
Choreography and Composition: As students become more proficient in their technique, they begin to explore the art of choreography and composition. They learn how to create their own dance sequences, experimenting with different movement patterns, dynamics, and spatial arrangements. Emphasis is placed on creativity, expression, and storytelling through movement.
Performance Skills: A significant component of the curriculum involves developing performance skills. Students learn stage presence, projection, and expression, as well as the importance of teamwork and collaboration in group performances. They have opportunities to showcase their progress in recitals, showcases, or informal studio presentations throughout the year.
Cross-Training and Conditioning: To support overall physical health and prevent injuries, students participate in cross-training and conditioning exercises. This may include Pilates, strength training, or cardio workouts tailored to the specific needs of dancers. Additionally, students learn about injury prevention and proper self-care practices for maintaining their bodies.
Guest Workshops and “Masterclasses”: Throughout the year, guest instructors and professional dancers may conduct workshops and masterclasses, offering valuable insights and inspiration to students. These sessions provide opportunities for students to learn from industry professionals, explore specialized techniques, and gain exposure to different artistic perspectives.
Progression and Assessment: Progression in the class is assessed through regular evaluations, including technique assessments, choreography assignments, and performance evaluations. Feedback from instructors and peers helps students track their growth and identify areas for improvement, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
Conclusion and Reflection: As the year draws to a close, students reflect on their journey and accomplishments throughout the course. They have the opportunity to showcase their skills and creativity in a culminating performance or project, celebrating their achievements and the collective spirit of artistic expression fostered throughout the year.
