Update 4/16/26: All available externship placements at Palomar and Sharp are filled through August. We will not review new applications (unless you are applying to a different facility) during the summer break. Application review for the 2026–2027 school year will resume on August 18, 2026.
Externship Workshop Update (2025–2026 School Year): The final two externship workshops for the 2025–2026 school year will take place in May. After these sessions, no externship workshops will be offered during the summer. Workshops will resume after August 18, 2026 for the 2026–2027 school year. Please check the externship registration form for updates and upcoming workshop dates.
Given the extended wait time, I encourage you to consider finding another facility, such as a doctor’s office or clinic, that may be willing to accept you as an extern. Details for establishing and completing an externship outside of our current partners are on the PTA Externship website home page. If you have a connection, we can explore establishing an affiliation agreement on your behalf.
You can also pursue an externship with Dr. Wong. Again, please see the PTA Externship website home page for details regarding a Dr. Wong externship. Please note that only Ken Gravley, Director of PTA, can schedule and approve an externship with Dr. Wong. If you have any questions regarding a Dr. Wong externship, you must email info@phlebotomyta.com. I cannot answer any questions about a Dr. Wong externship.
Please know that Ken Gravely, Director of PTA, and I have been actively and diligently seeking additional externship sites, but unfortunately, our efforts have not yet resulted in new placement opportunities. We will continue to do our best to secure additional options.

Students will be placed based on a first-come, first profile COMPLETED basis.
Only students who attend a Palomar Externship Workshop with their COMPLETED Complio profile ready for review
will be scheduled for an available date.
Once a date is confirmed and you are scheduled, we will not be able to switch your date for any reason (Palomar rules).
If you miss your scheduled date for any reason, you will not be eligible for another placement date.
ONLY the PMC POWAY lab is open at this time.
Ensure your Complio subscription remains active. Subscriptions are valid for one year, so most should still be in effect.

This section details instructions for externships at
Palomar Health ONLY!
All Palomar externships are completed in ONE 40 hr. work week, Monday-Friday 7:30am-4pm. They do not accommodate personal schedules. If you want the spot, you have to adhere to the schedule and be ready to show up every day when scheduled. If you miss your externship dates, you will not be eligible for another externship. Plan accordingly! Palomar has the right to rescind externship placement at any time for any reason. Hospital staffing, CDC requirements, or other factors can cause Palomar to cease externships. You are never guaranteed an externship because you completed the application process.
These placements are the most coveted and very popular because students receive the most competencies practiced in this externship, it most likely leads to a job offer, and they provide very competitive pay and benefits. That being said, Palomar also requires the most comprehensive onboarding requirements because they want highly motivated, intelligent candidates who can follow directions and complete tasks in a timely and professional manner. It is the STUDENT'S responsibility to navigate this process and figure out a way to complete each of the instructions.
In addition to these instructions, you must complete and adhere to ALL the externship protocols detailed throughout the website.
The compliance and onboarding process typically takes 4-6 weeks depending on the student's ability to complete these steps. Please plan accordingly.
Phlebotomy Externship Clearance through Complio
STEP 3.1: Use the Phlebotomy Clearance Guide to complete all of the necessary Complio and additional requirements for requesting a phlebotomy externship with Palomar Health.
Please understand you will be solely responsible for the fees associated with the on-boarding/clearance process.
The clearance guide will provide all of the specific information as to how to satisfy each component of the clearance process.
Two out of three students have their profiles and externship placement requests rejected because they do not follow directions. Be sure to READ every word of the clearance guide before starting your profile and then continue to check off every component of the guide as you go to avoid missing essential deadlines or details required.
Completing this clearance packet does not guarantee placement. You still have to follow through with all of the PTA requirements listed on this website and adhere to the protocols and practices we outline beyond this initial phase of requesting an externship.

Effective 10/1/25 - Palomar Flu Requirements
Palomar has updated its COVID-19 vaccine requirements. Students who have not received the new single-dose COVID-19 vaccine after 9/1/23 must sign and upload the COVID-19 declination form to the Complio COVID-19 profile, ALONG with the current health screening packet.
STEP 3.2: Once all Complio verification is received you will need to request your Complio package be cleared by us.
Access the Complio Clearance & Date Request Form to request your Complio package to be reviewed for clearance and to request an externship start date.
The date you request must be no EARLIER than 4 weeks from when you request Complio Clearance.

You should receive an email with either confirmation of compliance or rejection with steps to clear your profile in 3-5 business days. Your start date will also be confirmed or rejected depending on your clearance status.
STEP 3.3: Once the request is approved, a Clinical Rotation will be made on your behalf and you will receive a notification to complete the "Clinical Rotation" tab in your Complio account.

Once students have been preliminarily approved by Complio and the Externship Coordinator, a "Palomar Health Allied Health Rotation Package" will be requested on your behalf and a new "Tab" labeled "Clinical Rotation" will appear at the top of your Complio Dashboard.
You must complete and submit any requirements in Complio for your Clinical Rotation at least 14 BUSINESS DAYS before your start date.
Your final clearance step will be to review the specific instructions detailed in the clearance guide as to how to show up for your first day.
