Hello First Grade Families!
We had an exciting week delving into some cool planet facts! We looked at Mercury and Venus this week, and started on Mars. Ask your first grader what new facts they learned! In math we are working on numbers that add up to 10, counting by 2's, and counting by 5's!
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
**PIcture day is NEXT WEEK on Wednesday, October 15th. You can find the flyer here.
**We need volunteers! Our class will be tie dying on Tuesday, October 28th from 8:30-11am. Please let me know if you are able to come in for any or all of the time. The sign up sheet to come in and help is here.

Hey 1st grade families,
The red math journal will make its way home with some more pages of math to complete! The assigned pages 11-18 are not independent work so your help is needed! Plus there is a game! These are due back onFriday, October 17th.
Helpful terms this week include:
Count on - a faster form of counting which involves starting at the larger number (example for a domino with 6 and 3 more dots: 6, 7, 8, 9)
Doubles facts - a math fact involving the same numbers (4+4, 6+6, etc.). Practicing these facts will create fluency or the ability to know the answer quickly.
Directions for the first few pages can be found on page 11. Using a pencil and a paper clip, you will spin the paper clip and mark the coin on which it lands. This will be a familiar workplace that all students have played. In school, we drew a circle with 5 to show nickel and a circle with 1 to show a penny.
Page 13 is just an extra page to practice the game.
Page 15 has 2 different spinners for 2 separate games. Before playing, predict which coin will win and give a reason for your thinking. Using the results, fill in page 16 with the help of the graph you made on the previous page. Pages 15 and 16 will look different for you. Mine is just an example.
Pages 17 and 18 are all about one more and one less. When adding up the dots on each domino, students should be trying to identify doubles facts or use the 'count on' strategy. Then decide what number comes before and after. This gives your child a strong sense of number order.
I have attached pictures of answers to this email if you need them. This should be brought back to school no later than Friday, October 17th. Please send any questions my way! Good luck and have fun!
