A simple machine is a tool with no or few moving parts. Simple machines make work easier. They help people do work using less energy/force to move heavy objects.
Work: the amount of energy used to move an object
Inclined planes are simple, sloped surfaces used to help moveobjects or people between different vertical levels (Lower to higher level) with less effort, such as ramps, staircases, and slides. They work by reducing the force needed to raise a heavy load over a distance.
Examples of inclined planes: ramps, roads (switchbacks), slides, funnel, roof, road ramp, handicap pedestrian ramp, staircase, escalator
Levers are simple machines used to amplify force, speed, or distance. Levers are categorized into three classes based on the position of the fulcrum, load, and effort. Levers which are used for lifting, cutting, or moving objects with greater efficiency. (bottle opener, tongs, hammer, garden shovel, hockey stick,
Examples of levers:
1st Class Lever the load is at one end of the beam, and the effort is at the other end. The fulcrum is between the load and effort. : scissors, catapult, car jack, boat oar, bolt cutter, wire stripper
2nd Class: wheel barrows, bottle opener, nutcracker, door
3rd Class: fishing rod, human arm, garden shovel, hockey stick
A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around pole (shaft). Screws can be used to hold things in place. They also help move things up and down with less force.
Examples of Screws: screw for wood, drill, jar lids,
Pulley
Pulley uses a wheel with a grove in the middle, an axle and a rope or chain. Pullies are used to lift heavy objects. A pulley can move objects up or down or sideways.
Examples of Pulley: crane, flag poles, curtains can be attached to a pulley, sailboats have pullies to raise and lower sails, elevators use pulleys.
Wedge
Wedge is an object with two slanted sides. Some wedges split objects apart. Some wedges hold objects in place.
Examples of Wedge: axe, blade of a knife, door stop, scissors, thumbtack, nail, blade of a shovel, tines of a fork, bowl of a spoon
