Programs available to ALL Juniors:
Youth Leadership Hardin County is a program designed to provide selected high school juniors who display leadership potential with an opportunity to learn about the strengths and concerns of their community from local leaders.
American Private Enterprise Seminar (APES) is where youth scholars and junior leaders work with community and business leaders to learn how to learn how the American economic system works and how it fits into the global economy. Along the way, they gain experience leading and working in groups and they become acquainted with career opportunities in various businesses.
The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a nonpartisan program that teaches young women responsible citizenship and love for God and Country. Since the inception of the Girls State progam in 1937, nearly one million young women have had the opportunity to learn first-hand how their state and local government works.
A free week-long program each summer
American Legion Girls State are among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students
During Girls State programs, participants are exposed to the rights, privileges, duties, and responsibilities of citizenship
Applications available late Spring
An all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. is awarded each June to FIVE young people from the Nolin Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation service area. These students spend a week touring Gettysburg, the Smithsonian Institution, Arlington National Cemetery, the FBI Building, the National Zoo, Library of Congress, U.S. Capitol, The White House, the Kennedy Center, plus a visit with Kentucky’s congressional delegation.

Lincoln Trail Youth Salute
The Lincoln Trail Youth Salute (of Hardin County, KY, and surrounding counties) is part of a national program sponsored by the National Council on Youth Leadership. NCYL is a non-profit organization.
Program Requirements:
be a high school junior at time of entry
have a 3.0 GPA
have served in 2 peer-elected or sponsor-chosen leadership positions
be an overall exemplary citizen
Students are nominated by their teachers and counselors to participate in the program. Students’ applications are then evaluated by the LTYS committee.
Students accepted into the program will then participate in a photography session designed to highlight their interests and activities. There is no charge for the photography session.
Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs (GSE)
The Governor's School for Entrepreneurs (GSE) is a college and career ready program giving Kentucky high school students a hands-on, experiential immersion into innovation and entrepreneurship in order to empower them to make a positive impact on their communities through innovation and to become business leaders of tomorrow.
Individuals in 9th – 11th grades can apply
Application process opens November of each year. It includes a 2 minute video, written application, and 2 letters of recommendation.
Every summer, our faculty of professional artists and educators guide over five hundred of Kentucky’s finest young artists through three weeks of incredibly intense (and incredibly fun) arts instruction. For three weeks, the students live, breathe, eat and sleep the arts. It’s a thrilling, often life-changing experience, as they meet new friends, explore their creativity, and discover new things about who they are and who they can be in the future.
A free 3-week residential summer program at the University of Kentucky
Artforms include: Architecture, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, New Media (animation, video production, & digital imagery), Visual Art, and Vocal Music
The Governor's Scholars Program strives to enhance Kentucky's next generation of civic and economic leaders. Established in 1983, the program provides academic and personal growth through the balance of a strong liberal arts program with a full co-curricular and residential life experience. Students must complete an application and compete with others from across the state. Those selected attend the program free of charge.
5-week free residential program at Centre, Morehead, and Murray

6 juniors from EHS will be sent to the state selection committee
1 teacher recommendation required from one core academic teacher from 9th-11th grade
1 community leader recommendation required (may not be employed by the school)
Must have a standardized test score (PSAT, ACT, or SAT)
Application due in the Counseling Office by 3:30pm on 12/14/2023
CHA is a three week academic, personal, and social development program for outstanding high school students in the summer after their junior year.
Benefits of the Commonwealth Honors Academy:
Three weeks of academic and enrichment experience at MSU
Six hours of tuition-free, transferable university credit
Six additional tuition-free credit hours during the student’s senior year
Guaranteed four-year, $2,000-per-year housing scholarship to Murray State University
Collaboration with other honor students and outstanding university and secondary faculty in a campus living-learning environment
