Hey! My name is Anya Gill and I am a senior at Evanston Township High School. I have always had a passion for writing, having written creatively my whole life. It was when I joined my school's newspaper that I knew I wanted to channel my love of the written word into journalism.
I hold the position of Feature Editor for The Evanstonian, ETHS's student newspaper. This is my third year on staff and previously I was a writer for the Arts and Entertainment section, and then the editor of the Arts and Entertainment section. Journalistic writing has opened me up to just how powerful storytelling and the written word can be, and made me better as a writer in all aspects.
As a writer, I find topics I am already passionate about and conduct extensive interviews and background research to give readers a deeper understanding of such ideas. Many of the topics I have explored in articles are arts related and relevant to my local community, or school related and interesting to my peers. One of my goals as a writer is to never write a boring article -- I always use exciting language and multimedia elements to bring a story to life. As an editor, I make sure to not over-edit, and instead give constructive feedback that a writer can use to help edit their story themselves. This year, myself and a few of my peers started a multimedia series called "ETown Explores" where we venture to unexplored parts of our high school, and debunk, or uncover, the mysteries there.
Outside of journalism, you can find me playing tennis, volunteering in my community, and trying out new recipes!
