Goal 1: College and Career Readiness
The school has maintained its partnership with the New Tech Network, providing resources and professional development for teachers, with sessions planned for January and April. AP exam participation is strong, with 285 students registered for 476 exams. Counselors are meeting individually with students, prioritizing those with special needs, and organizing field trips to universities and community organizations. Efforts to improve math achievement include professional development for teachers and the implementation of evidence-based strategies. Literacy initiatives, such as the Beanstack reading app, are still in progress.
Goal 2: Increasing Graduation Rates
Counselors are conducting regular one-on-one meetings with students to review their progress toward graduation. Parent engagement has been encouraged through coffee chats, workshops, and ELAC meetings. Professional development for teachers covers project-based learning, SEL practices, and restorative practices, while inclusion practices are being implemented for students with disabilities. Homework support programs, such as the Breakfast Club and after-school homework center, are being promoted but require further improvement.
Goal 3: English Language Learner Success
The English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) has resumed, and counselors are conducting academic counseling in students’ primary language, primarily Spanish. Professional development for teachers on differentiation and support for English learners is ongoing but needs further emphasis. Programs like ELD newcomer transition classes, conversational English classes, and the "Pathfinder" mentorship program require additional implementation.
Goal 4: Reducing Suspensions
The school has implemented Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to address academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs. Programs like the 9th Grade Transition and CARE Team are providing targeted interventions. The Wellness Center supports mental health with social workers, therapy groups, and lunch activities. Efforts to promote positive school culture include student recognition and campaigns emphasizing school values, though increased communication with parents and staff recognition efforts are areas for growth.
Goal 5: Reducing Chronic Absenteeism
An "Attendance Matters" campaign has been launched, incorporating interventions such as Attendance Review Conferences and partnerships with New Hope for Youth. The school is also piloting peer mentorship programs, such as Link Crew, and planning transition classes for students with attendance or behavioral challenges.
Goal 6: Support for Homeless and Foster Youth
Programs like Comet Academy are addressing the unique needs of homeless and foster youth, with dedicated resources for credit recovery and support staff collaboration. Despite progress, areas like staff awareness and regular check-ins with guardians require improvement to ensure wraparound support.
While James Lick High School has made strides in various areas, such as promoting college readiness, engaging parents, and providing mental health support, continued focus is needed on increasing student engagement, supporting English learners, improving attendance, and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
