GEAR UP SJSU

GEAR UP's mission is to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education by providing 7 years of academic and college and career readiness services to students attending GEAR UP project middle and high schools.

PAPER

• A free, unlimited online tutoring service, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, funded by ESUHSD. 

• Certified tutors help with math, writing, and all core subjects by guiding students through problem-solving steps rather than giving direct answers. 

• Students can request a different tutor instantly by selecting “next” if the fit isn’t right.

TO ACCESS: 

• Log in to arms.esuhsd.org with your student email and password. 

• Search for “PAPER,” set up your account

• Select your class and connect with a tutor anytime.

SAN JOSE PUBLIC LIBRARY

• A free, unlimited online tutoring for all SJPL cardholders through Tutor.com. 

• Certified tutors support students from elementary through college in math, writing, and test preparation, with access to study guides and practice tools.

SCHOOL HOUSE WORLD

• Founded by the creator of Khan Academy

• Schoolhouse.world connects students to free

• Certified peer tutors around the globe. 

• Sessions are available in math, science, SAT prep, and more, offered as both one-on-one and group tutoring.

• Create a free account, and choose your subject. 

• Join an immediate live session or register for a scheduled tutoring time.

CovEd

• A nonprofit that connects underserved K–12 students to volunteer college student mentors and tutors. 

• Support can be academic (math, science, humanities) or mentorship-focused (college prep, study skills).

TO ACCESS:

• Complete the student sign-up form. 

• Students are matched with a volunteer mentor or tutor based on your needs and availability.

LEARN TO BE

• A nonprofit that provides free, personalized one-on-one online tutoring for underserved K–12 students. 

• Volunteer college student tutors work weekly with the same student across many subjects until the student feels that their goals have been met. 

TO ACCESS:

• Students are matched within 3 days.

•  A dedicated tutor will then meet weekly online.

BAY AREA TUTORING

• A nonprofit that provides free or low-cost academic support for underserved and at-risk youth, including foster, homeless, and justice-involved students. 

• Services include one-on-one tutoring in math, English, and science, available both in-person and online.

STACK EXCHANGE

• A network of 180+ expert Q&A communities. 

• Students can ask subject-specific questions in math, science, technology, writing, and more. 

• Responses are often detailed explanations, making it ideal for deeper understanding rather than quick fixes.
