Students in technical theater get a behind the scenes experience in how theatre is produced. Each unit is taught to all students. Advanced students begin to develop a focus area and go further into those learning areas. Students who are interested in a career should consider applying to our apprenticeship program. Students in the apprenticeship program are trained to work with our renting clients of the IHS theatre and can become paid student technicians for IHS.
Stage Basics and Equipment Safety: The first unit we tackle are knowing the basic of the stage and safety with the use of the tools used. Students throughout the year will need to recall and use these basic universal skills to help create a safe working environment
Scenic Design: Stepping into the world of theatre requires students to learn about set design based upon research. Students will create interior scenic designs and build models based upon those designs.
Scene Building: Throughout the school year, our shows require built scenery demonstrating a variety of locations. Students will use a hands on approach in order to create scenery needed for productions throughout the year.
Lighting design: Theatrical lighting is a basic need for any production. Students will learn how to create and implement a basic lighting design.
Rigging: Students learn how to hang scenery and lighting through a counter balanced rigging fly system. Students will hang scenery and work with raising and lowering the scenery to the stage.
Costume building and design: From Ancient Greece to Futuristic worlds, How a character is dressed and put together completely depends on how costumes are designed and created. Students will also learn basic sewing techniques in order to help create costumes for the stage.
Sound design and implementation: Audio is a basic need for each production from sound reinforcement to Foley sound creation and modern day sound effects. Students will learn how to create, manipulate, and use computers to create sound in a variety of ways.
Properties Design and creation: How does an organization create an item needed for the stage when it is not available to purchase or too expensive to buy? Hand held items (props) teaches students to create/recreate objects which may or maynot be used in a stage production.
Scenic Stage painting: When we are preparing for both our fall and spring shows, students will learn and apply a variety of painting techniques to create scenic stage effects.
House Management and Public Relations: In this unit we will look into how guest relations with in the theatre can create a financial benefit in the real world. We will also investigate what role media and advertising plays in a theatre companies bottom line.
