Electric road vehicle sales are taking off - you only need to look at the MTA data to see that New Zealander's vehicle purchasing habits are moving away from utes towards hybrids and full electric vehicles. This will continue to accelerate as government subsidies and taxes based on emissions become bedded in. But... accidents will happen! And what to do with those used vehicle batteries and motors?
Cost effective marine conversions offer more usability than stationary batteries - or the potential to utilise your stationary battery in a different way - as well as the opportunity to offset some of the most polluting motors in New Zealand - 2 stroke outboards. A real win for decarbonisation.
E-Stroke was started by a boat-loving family who want to make the world a lower carbon place. In 2021 we looked to the market to see what options there were to buy an electric boat, and there were none. So instead, we looked to create our own. E-Stroke has been born out of a want to do better with waste, create real circularity within the vehicle battery industry, and decarbonise the highest emission motors in New Zealand. While we are starting small, we have grand plans to create positive change on the boating industry in New Zealand.
Jeff is involved across the decarbonisation sectors as an engineer and strategy leader at DETA. His expertise has been in developing low emission strategies for companies, regions, and countries to date, and he sees the opportunity everyday for every day people to play their role in decarbonising the economy. The marine sector is one that he thinks is definately hard to abate, and needs innovative thinking to make low carbon boating accessible for all - that's where E-stroke comes in. Jeff holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from UC, and E-Stroke also offers him the chance to get his hands dirty - like a real engineer.
Jeff can get around the course 15-off, as long as the boat driver keeps the speed in check!
Mike has spent the past 15 years working on some of the most expensive motorsport cars in the country, and his expertise in engine building and management has been rewarded with work as far away as Laguna Seca in USA. Mike is a fitter/turner by trade and when it comes to developing some of the customised battery modules, and amendments required to the outboards, he's an expert. Turning his hand to decarbonisation is natural to Mike, and he is keen to make the world a lower carbon place for his young family.
Mike can't quite get through a slalom course yet.. but he's working on it.
