What is Social Emotional Learning???

Social emotional learning (SEL) is understood as a process through which people build awareness and skills in managing emotions, setting goals, establishing relationships, and making responsible decisions that support success in school and in life (CASEL, 2015). In 2014, Illinois became the first to adopt state standards for social emotional learning. Since then, several other states have adopted similar policies or are currently developing such policies. Illinois Social Emotional Learning student standards for grades K-12 were adopted as a result of the 2003 Children’s Mental Health Act. The 10 SEL standards, along with state specific goals, age-appropriate benchmarks, and performance descriptors, were a collaborative effort between ISBE and the Illinois Children’s Mental Health Partnership with technical support from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
