Aharon Cohen Mohliver is an Assistant Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at London Business School. His research centres on liminal practices—practices that exist in a social “grey zone” space, lying between what is socially acceptable and what is already labelled as unlawful or unacceptable by society. He studies how these practices emerge, spread, and become normalized, in contexts ranging from care homes and the prescription drug epidemic to auditors, financial markets, and startups. This stream of work aims to inform research and practice on how to design policies and interventions that reduce the risk of future harm to the firm or society. His current work expands this theme to contested social issues, examining how polarization divides audiences around competing values and standards of social acceptability—so that liminal practices are the ones violating one group’s norms while upholding the other group’s moral values. In this stream he studies the competitive equilibria in which all firms maximize profits by becoming involved in social issues that are often far removed from their actual business, how financial markets reward such deviations, and how this dynamic shapes corporate activism, stakeholder responses, firm structures and processes and, how, often, competition drives firm’s actions toward increasing the underlying polarization rather than resolving the social issue.
Aharon has published in Administrative Science Quarterly, Management Science, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, as well as the Journal of Business Ethics and book chapters. His work has been recognized by professional bodies in awards and nominations, including the 2024 Responsible Research in Management Award showing the relationship between physicians’ professional networks and the prescription drug epidemic. He serves on the editorial boards of the Organization Science and Strategic Management Journal and writes for wider audiences in the Financial Times, Fortune, Forbes, and Think at London Business School.
