Dispensing Medication:
Whenever possible, medication should be given at home. In the event that a medication must be given at school, New York State law mandates the following information is given to school before any medication can be administered.
Written permission from the doctor, including dosage and times of administration.
Written permission from the parent or guardian
Medications must be in a pharmacy labeled container with only enough medication needed for dispensing in school. Medications in unlabeled containers cannot be given.
Once these requirements are met, the nurse will safely administer medicine during the school hours. To protect your child all medications are kept under lock and key.
All unused medication must be picked up by the last day of school or it will be disposed of.
Field Trips:
If your child is going on a field trip and requires medication we recommend you accompany your child on the field trip. However, if you are unable to attend you may designate someone else to accompany your child to dispense the medication. If you choose this option you, the parent/guardian, will need to send a note into school indicating who your designee is and that they are properly trained to administer your child's medication. Option two includes a note from your child's physician for change in medication order on days of field trips. Option three involves if no one is able to accompany your child, the school nurse will make arrangements to insure that your child receives their medications from a nurse while on the field trip.
