Remember, the harder you press and closer together your marks, the darker the color will appear. Work from light to dark and use layering. It is easier to add than to remove!
Then observe and draw an item and shade it with each type of grayscale marks. Note you can draw the outline once and trace it onto other papers. Tracing is ok if the original is your own. When tracing, it helps to tape the papers to a window with light coming thru for an anywhere lightbox.
Really observe where the shadows and highlights fall. Note it changes if the light source moves.

Parents: if your child really enjoys sketching in pencil try a set of drawing pencils or woodless graphite drawing sticks in H and B scales (grades H= lighter/harder lead and B= softer/darker leads), kneaded erasers and a set of blending sticks. Also, spiral bound sketch books are forgiving if you want to remove a page and have some give if you like to tape/glue in found inspirations.
