Week 14: November 30-December 4, 2020

Theme: Hiberation

This is a full week of virtual learning for our Webster Little Mos! I hope you all have a great week, streaming with your teachers! I have included activities to do at home. You can always look at previous weeks, weeks 1-13!

Introduction: Before reading the story, Bear Snores On! Have a discussion with your family of what the word "hiberation" means to you. Click on this link Bear Snores On! to listen to a read-aloud by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman. You can also click on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCkRtyXq-fg

Lesson: We learned from the read-aloud that animals hibernate and how they get ready to sleep for months at a time! Hibernation is a way that some animals deal with the harshness of winter. They curl up in a safe place and stay there until the end of winter. They breathe, but at a low rate, and their body temperature is near the freezing mark. In warmer weather they return to their regular activities. Check out this video and you will learn even more fascinating things about hibernation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhrhcsICrE8&list=PLTULQByDH7u5xjoB6qfZ99HagPQremq4K&index=1.

Activity: Hibernate!

Introduce /demonstrate/teach bear-walk (on hands and feet) if needed. Click on this link for an example of how to bear walk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5ibn8kBhyU.

"Hibernate" by laying down and making a snoring noise each time the parent/adult/older sibling says, "hibernate" and turns the lights off, and then to "wake up" and start bear-walking again when the lights come back on the the teacher says "springtime". Children who are unable to perform bear-walk can participate by walking upright, as bears sometimes do.

Please remember to watch the Bear Snores On!, Getting Ready for Hibernation, before doing the activity.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via e-mail at strombley@eskymos.com.

Week 13: November 23-27, 2020

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

Mystery Exercise Box

Mystery exercise box is a fun hands-on project that students can create and then use to get exercise and be active!‬

Materials Needed:

Tissue Box (or any box)

Paper

Scissors

Glue/Tape

Markers/Crayons/Colored Pencils

Stickers/Magazines/Crafty Decorations

Description of Idea

In this project-based activity students construct a “Mystery Exercise Box.”

To make this box they decorate a tissue box or any type of box in their own creative way using paper, magazine clippings, stickers, drawings, etc. this helps students feel invested in what they are doing because they can personalize it. (See video link below for example of how to make the mystery exercise box.)

Then students write down exercises and/or actions on slips of paper to fold up and put inside of the box.

They can also include questions such as, “What is your favorite sport, healthy food, outdoor activity?”

Once they are done they can shake up the box and pick out a slip of paper to see what it unveils! Your child can add activities/exercises throughout the school year!

Week 9: Purposeful Practice

October 26-30, 2020

Week 9: In order to have the energy we need to stay active we need to fuel our bodie(Actually, I have my eyes closed when he is on the football field, way too stressful for this mama)s with nutritious food. Fruit is 1 of the 5 food groups. Fruit tastes sweet and delicious and it also gives us energy (calories), vitamins, minerals, and fiber.) What delicious fruit do you like to eat for energy? Those are really great food choices. We’re going to play a game with our jump ropes called Jumping Jello! (Please see the "focus/activity lesson of the week" below) Use the rope to make a circle on the floor. Inside that circle is a giant bowl for fresh fruit Jello, filled with all of the fruit that we just talked about. Jump into the bowl of Jello and bounce 5 times before you jump out of the bowl. Every time you jump, say the name of a fruit. You can also say the names of other foods that are good for you, like vegetable and whole grains. Next, try to create new ways of jumping in the Jello!

Focus/Activity lesson for Week 9

Jumping Jello: Make a circle with a jump rope (or a couple of shoelaces). The circle is a big bowl of fruity Jello! Week 8: Meaningful Movement

October 19-23, 2020

Week 8: Brain & Body Warm-Ups: Physical activity is fun, and it is also meaningful for our bodies. It helps our bodies stay healthy. Nutritious food gives our bodies the energy they need to be active. Meaningful movement can also help us control our emotions and keep our minds healthy. This lesson helps us warm-up our brains and bodies while we practice a mindful breathing technique called equal breathing. You can do our warm-up activities in school or at home. Let’s try Balance and Breathe. This is a great exercise to do as children, as well as adults! :-)

Focus/Activity lesson for Week 8

Let’s use cups to help us practice mindful breathing (If you don’t have a Speed Stacks cup, you can use any small safe object). Hold your hand out flat in front of you, parallel with the ground. Balance 1 cup in the palm of your hand. Take 5 equal breathes (inhale 4 count, exhale 4 count). As you breathe, focus on balancing the cup. Need a challenge?! Balance 1 cup in each hand. October 12-16, 2020

Week 7: We will focus on motivation. Motivation is a reason to do something, a desire to reach a goal.

Focus/Activity lessons for Week 7

Animal Acting: Let’s get our bodies moving with Animal Acting. Click on this link (https://vimeo.com/410411710). When the music plays, jog in place. When the music stops, safely act like an animal. For example, flamingos stand on 1 leg; elephants wag their trunks. You can pick any animal you want, as long as you’re safe. When the music starts again, jog in place.

Nature walk: My kids LOVE a good scavenger hunt! Nature scavenger hunts in the Fall provide fun, engaging, hands on learning for kids. Search for insects, nuts, leaves, and other things that can easily be found outside in the season of Fall/Autumn. If you take any pictures during a nature walk with your family, send them to Mrs. Trombley at strombley@eskymos.com.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via e-mail at the address above.

Week 6: Brain and Body Warm-Ups

October 5-9, 2020

Week 6: We will focus on courage and health. Courage is the ability to do what’s right even though you feel fear. Health is the state of being free from sickness or injury.

Focus/Activity lessons for Week 6

Mirror, Mirror: Introduce the game with students on floor spots facing the teacher. Parent/Guardian starts as the leader. Students mirror teacher’s movements. Next, students face a partner/sibling/parent (6’+ apart). One partner leads, the other mirrors. The leader makes safe movements. The mirror follows along.

Week 5: Purposeful practice: Invisible Rocks

September 28-October 2, 2020

Week 5: We will focus on personal behavior, which are the actions of an individual person. We have two activities to complete this week, with our invisible rock garden!

Focus/Activity lessons for Week 5

Invisible Rock Collector: WOW! Our invisible rock garden grew really fast! If you did not complete week 4, you will need to go back to "plant our invisible rock garden". Now, it is time to collect our rocks. Put on your invisible backpack. When the music plays (use slow-tempo music), walk in the activity area and carefully pick up invisible rocks and place them in your backpack. Find open space, squat down by bending your knees and lift the rock into your pack. It is not a race. Collect 5–10 invisible rocks while music plays. Here is the link to click on to view the Invisible Rock Collector: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNOnij33FQI&feature=youtu.be

Invisible Rock Buster: Now that we’ve collected our invisible rocks, it’s time to break them into invisible pebbles. To do that, take 1 invisible rock, place it inside your personal bubble, and jump on it 5 times. Here is the link to click to view the Invisible Rock Buster activity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlFjKirDkk8&feature=youtu.be

Week 4: Brain and Body Warm-ups

September 21-25, 2020

Week 4: We will focus on enthusiasm! This is an important feeling you get when you are excited about a goal and are motivated to work hard!

Focus Lesson/Activity: Invisible rock garden

Invisible Rock Garden: It is time to plant an invisible rock garden. Click on this link, invisible rock garden, for a step-by-step video. When the music plays (use slow-tempo music), we will walk in our activity area and plant invisible rock seeds. To do that, you have to be 6–12 feet from all other people. Find an open space, dig an invisible hole with your invisible shovel, and then drop in an invisible rock seed. Cover the hole with invisible dirt, and water it with invisible water. It is not a race. Plant 5 invisible rocks while music plays.

Week 3: Purposeful Practice

September 14-18, 2020

Week 3: We need to have fun and be silly, for our physical, mental, and social well-being. We enjoy playing physical activity games. We enjoy physical activity and it helps to protect our health.

Focus Lesson/Activity: Animal Dance Party

We are going to use the animal alphabet cards (click on underlined link) to have an animal dance party. Use the Animal Alphabet Cards to pick animals that will come to our dance party. You can use these cards to have dance parties in your home. When I hold up a card, everyone will dance like the animal I’m holding. If I hold up 2 cards, you can pick which animal you want to be. Remember, stay inside your 6-foot bubble!

If you need a paper copy, please e-mail strombley@eskymos.com and I will print off a set of animal cards to be picked up at the Webster kindergarten center.

Week 2: Personal Space

September 7-11, 2020

Week 2: Personal space is needed to feel safe. When others enter our space, it sometimes become uncomfortable. To keep us safe, we should respect the 6 feet of personal space.

Activity: 30-second animal jumps

We are going to use the animal alphabet cards (click on underlined link) to play a jumping game. Each card gives two animal choices. You will need a 30-second music timer. While the music is playing (30 seconds), jump inside your personal space. When the music stops, pick another animal from the next card (you will need to print these at home). It is okay if you change your mind during the 30 seconds and choose to jump like another animal.
