Phase 3: Reflecting and Evaluating
The internship experience culminates with students and site supervisors reflecting on and evaluating their work together. As in Phase 2, this tool focuses on youth’s skill development and the work site experience, from both the site supervisor and intern perspectives. Though, there are a few key differences in this phase:
The site supervisor and intern are looking back across the internship, from beginning to end, reflecting on the intern’s skill development, and identifying trends (i.e., attendance got a little more spotty towards the end, but communication got progressively better).
The intern and supervisor evaluate each other, answering questions like, would you recommend this internship placement for other students, and, would you employ this intern?
ICs have a chance to reflect on students’ evaluations of an employer site and consider what kinds of support may be needed to improve students’ experiences there. The IC may also determine if the employer site or that type of site is a good fit for students.
In order to reflect, ICs should go back first – to gather and review the LTW Monthly Skills Progress data and the Employer Site Assessment responses. If ICs have a strong organizational system for the Monthly Skills Progress data, the review of this data will be simpler. And then, ICs will just facilitate final reflections and evaluations through:

This tool serves two important purposes: (1) Students are prompted to review and reflect on the feedback about their skill development, strength and growth areas, over the duration of their internship, including a summative evaluation from their site supervisor. (2) You get feedback from students to assess employer work sites

This tool is designed for internship coordinators (the “you” in this guidance) to use:
With site supervisors and interns at the conclusion of an internship.
How to use this protocol:
There are a few stages to engaging with this tool.
Review and Organize Data
Pull up the Employer Site Assessment Form and any notes you’ve gathered through conversations with the intern and site supervisor.
Prepare the student’s Monthly Skills Progress data for review.
Tip: If you’ve been using hard copies, go through them and note/highlight in some way trends you want to discuss with the site supervisor and student. If you’ve been using Google Forms, look at the graphs the form has created and use them to identify trends that will support the site supervisor and student reflections.
Supervisor Evaluation
Go through the Site Supervisor Reflection Protocol with the site supervisor.
Give them the Site Supervisor Summative Intern Evaluation Form.
Tip: The order of the data you review with them is intentional – Employer Site Assessment Form and then Monthly Skills Progress. By revisiting the Employer Site Assessment data first, you and the site supervisor will re-establish the working conditions the intern experienced; this may help you ask any clarifying and probing questions when you review Monthly Skills Progress data.
Assess the Work Site
Gather the student feedback about the site from all the interns working there, review it and make note of questions, bright spots, and concerns you want to share with the site supervisor when you return to the Employer Site Assessment Form for a new cohort of interns.
Tip: At the end of this stage, pause to consider if this employer site or this type of site is a good fit for youth at your school.
