ENGLISH IV:
AP Literature and Composition
Character
After reading through the OED definitions of character and working with the assigned text (Jane Eyre or Great Expectations), select an additional work (fiction or nonfiction) that in some way speaks to an aspect of “character.” Consider ways to complement your reading with podcasts, articles, current events, other works, etc.
Parents, we encourage you to recommend books you love that fit the theme of character as well and read along with your child.
Assignment:
After reading either Jane Eyre or Great Expectations, research film adaptations and select one to watch closely. Find at least three major scenes in the film that differ in some way from the same scene depicted in the novel. Locate these three scenes in the text and, using annotations, evaluate the author’s techniques with regard to language and style. Mark these passages and be prepared to discuss them when you return to school in the fall.
While we will be studying aspects of characterization via literature throughout the year, we also will be evaluating aspects of character in connection with our mission: “Igniting lives of purpose through the development of an educated conscience.” To this end, as you select your second outside reading book, consider various ways “character” is developed.
As they read, astute scholars will infer how the book intersects with the OED definitions of character. They will also explore how this text challenges and confirms their previous understanding of character–and be prepared to share these insights (personal and academic) in seminar as well as in writing.
Click here for an annotation guide. Annotations are to help you engage with the text and help you remember what you have read. We strongly recommend annotating as we will be using this book for in-class assignments, and your notes will be invaluable to helping you efficiently navigate your text while completing them.
