Troubleshooting

You do not need to troubleshoot Chromebook issues.

You can report them to the tech department.

I used GoGuardian as a Teacher and I am a huge fan. I was able to monitor and interact with my students even when I was out of the classroom for meetings and conferences. It provided me with a timeline so I could go back (after the session) and check on any potential issues. It also allowed me to send out information or restrict Chromebooks when needed.

If it appears that there is an issue with GoGuardian, check these troubleshooting tips below.

I can't see the student's screen.

If you can see your classroom session and you know a student is using their Chromebook and GoGuardian says they are not, I have found two potential causes. (1) They are not using the Google account assigned to them. Students learned that they can get around restrictions by using someone else's login. Have the student show you the login so you can see if they are using their visdtx.org account.

There are ways for students "get around" filters. They are usually found in Chrome Extensions. If you are familiar with extensions, you can view them to see which one may be causing the issue. All enabled Extensions can be accessed by typing chrome://extensions in the URL address box at the top left of the Chrome Browser. Extensions can be removed on this page. Please contact your Blaise Boswell to notify him whether you find the extension or not. They can be blocked from future use.

All Chromebooks issued by Vernon ISD are managed by Vernon ISD. This should be displayed when you check the user name. You can also log out of the Chromebook and look at the login window. If you do not see "Managed by visdtx.org" the device has most likely been put into developer mode. The tech department will need to correct this.

I am having trouble communicating or controlling a student device from GoGuardian.

There are many great ways for all staff to monitor and control student devices. Sometimes more than one staff member in monitoring a device at the same time. You will be able to see the device, but another staff member has control of the device at the time.

Scheduling classes is the best way to alleviate this issue. Make sure that you schedule your classes from "bell to bell" so that they do not overlap with another session. If you Start a session manually due to schedule changes, make sure that you remember to Stop the session manually as well. The students screen will let you know who are viewing their device.

The Chromebook just isn't acting right.

Chrome regularly provides updates to the Chrome OS. If the Chromebook are regularly shut down or restarted, the updates will happen "automagically." If the students never turn their devices off, they can get behind on updates. This can cause "hiccups" in the use of the device.

Go to the Settings, from the menu go down to About Chrome OS. You can select Check for Updates on this window. If you do not know where to find the Settings option, simply type chrome://settings in the URL address box. I recommend having the students regularly shut down their devices once a week to ensure that the updates take place.

The student can not access their Google stuff.

If you type drive.google.com into the URL address box, the Google Drive of the person logged into the Chromebook will appear. This will let you know immediately if the student is using another account.
