Here we highlight products at Living Science that you may not know about, or you may have seen on the product list, but you may wonder why we would carry this and for what purpose?
This month's spotlight is on "Owl Pellets".
Owls swallow their prey whole or in large pieces, but they cannot digest fur, teeth, bones, or feathers. Like other birds, owls have two chambers in their stomachs. These two chambers work together to allow the owl to digest what they can and dispel the rest into a pellet which gets spit out, usually at night while the owl is roosting.
Interesting facts about Owl Pellets:
Owl pellets are not droppings - and do not smell!
Barn owl pellets contain the undigested fur and bones of as many as 6 small animals!
Many kinds of birds produce pellets, including birds of prey, crows and even sparrows. The appearance depends on what they eat.
All owls produce pellets, and dissecting them is a great way to find out what different owls eat!
If your campus is NOT a member of the Co-op, you can order these from the Living Science eStore at this link.
