Gender As Expressed by Line, 2020
Artist: Blu Matik
Pen and Colored Pencil on Paper
Art is a tool for self-expression and is visible when students are allowed to speak on issues that affect them personally.
Artist Statement
"Gender is something a lot of people struggle with. I wanted to express that, along with its complexity, by all of the intricate lines and how they intersect. The colored places in-between represent different shades of gender. I mainly used blues, purples, and some pinks for my own expression but everyone has a different ratio. For me the blue represents masculinity, the pink is femininity, and the purple is everything in-between. Gender is different for everyone and should be treated as such, not as a clean-cut Boy/Girl. Then again Gender and Sex are completely different as we are biologically Female, Male, or Intersex, while gender has a plethora of identities. Anyway; if you take anything away from this let it be: gender is a social construct, be who you want to be, unapologetically!"

Art gives a voice to the voiceless. "Here Guadalupe was able to express her belief in equality and justice for all. Although she is only 14 years old and is a first-year art student here at Porterville High, she is able to understand the value of creating art with a social purpose."Raquel Rojas, Art Teacher
