According to retired Flower Mound High School head basketball coach Eric Littleton "All of our success over the last thirteen years here at Flower Mound High School can be directly traced to Brian Merrick." While serving as the Jaguars offensive coordinator, the Jaguars broke every offensive record in school history, punctuated with the 2019-20 team setting the single-season scoring record while shooting a blazing 43% from the 3-point arc as a team on their way to a school record 350 three-point shots made. That 2019-20 team broke the record that was previously set by the 2012-13 team. That 2019-20 team was ranked as high as third in the state of Texas and as high as 9th in the nation. Littleton continued to explain "Equally impressive, we set all of these scoring records under Coach Merrick's direction while scoring over 60% of our points in the first seven seconds of our offensive possession." During Merrick's time leading the Jaguars offense, the Jaguars consistently led the state's most difficult district in scoring.
During his tenure at Flower Mound High School the Jaguars won the most games in school history in 2012-13 (26), won the second most games in school history in 2015-16 (25) and 2019-20 (25), won the third most games is school history in 2017-18 (24) made the playoffs in 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020 with the 2015 season being a play-in game, made the playoffs in three consecutive seasons in 2016, 2017, and 2018 for the first time in school history, posted the most wins in any three-year stretch in school history 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-2020(71 wins) and the second best three-year stretch in school history in the 2015-16 , 2016-17, and 2017-2018 (70 wins), posted the most wins in any two-year stretch in school history the 2016-17 and 2017-18 season (45 wins), posted the most wins in any 6-year stretch in school history(2012-2018), had the best finish in district in school history (2017-18), posted the second best district finish in school history (2016-17), beat the number one ranked team in the state of Texas for the first time in school history (2016-17), and broke into the Texas 6-A top ten for the first time in school history (2015-16). During the 2017-18 Flower Mound also ran the table the second half of district play for the first time in school history, winning all seven games by an average of 16 points on their way to winning 16 of their last 19 games. The 2019-20 team gave the Jaguars their fifth consecutive 20-plus win season for the first time in school history and their third 25-win season in five years. During that 2019-20 campaign the Flower Mound team also was ranked as high as 3rd in the state of Texas and 9th nationally by MaxPreps.com. Over the 2015-20 seasons, the Jaguar teams won 115 games which is, once again, the best 5-year stretch in school history.
"I had the chance to work with Coach Merrick for almost ten years at Flower Mound High School. Coach Merrick is absolutely the most innovative offensive mind in the state. His ability to find each player's strengths, exploit those strengths, and then put that player in a position on the court to use those strengths to score is simply uncanny. I hope my teams here at Marcus never have to guard his team."
Matt Wright, Head Coach, Flower Mound Marcus High School
"I met Coach Merrick through my dear friend Coach Eric Littleton at Flower Mound High School. Every spring we all attend the TABC conference together and every spring I look forward to picking Coach Merrick's brain to see what kind of crazy stuff he'll come up with to score points. The guy is as creative a coach as I've ever encountered. I wish I could convince him to come work for me."
Jason Fossett, Hall of Fame Head Coach, Belton High School
"Brian Merrick worked for me early in his career. He is in one word: Loyal. But, I can’t leave it at just one word. He is beyond loyal. He is also very humble and in today’s society that can be very rare. Brian is so dependable in everything. Dependable as a coach, as a teacher, and as a friend! He will go out of his way to help anyone at anytime!! The greatest compliment I can give about this man is that if I was not able to coach my own sons then I only choose one man to take my place. That man is Brian Merrick! He’s simply the best of the best! ANYONE who is fortunate enough to hire this man has hired a winner through and through!! I have no doubts about what this man stands for in all that he does. Brian Merrick is simply a great man."
Jeff Bell, Hall of Fame Coach, 1000-career win coach, 4 time State Champion Coach, 1 Texas Cup Title
"Every year here at Argyle we would scrimmage Flower Mound High School in the fall. Their floor spacing, the way they boxout and outlet the ball, and the way they relentlessly push the ball down the floor in transition was always so hard to defend and made us better defensively. I know Coach Littleton always said Coach Merrick was their offensive coordinator. He's a good one!"
Russell Perkins, Hall of Fame and Two-Time State Championship Coach, Argyle High School
"I met Coach Merrick when I was at Ponder...just a short distance down the road from Flower Mound High School. I quickly became a fan of his and Coach Littleton and their transition offense/Secondary Break and quickly implemented it here at Ponder. We went on to set a state record for three-point shots made in a season! Coach Littleton always referred to Coach Merrick as his offensive coordinator. He couldn't have had a better guy running the show!"
Jude Stanley, Hall of Fame and Two-Time State Championship Coach, Ponder High School
Coach Merrick has been head coach Eric Littleton's right-hand man for the best decade run in school history.
Relationships are everything!! Coach Merrick's player's showing up at his son's little league game to cheer him on!

"I worked with Coach Merrick at Flower Mound High School and hold him with the highest regard. He is all about the kids and encourages all of them to participate in as many sports as possible. In an age where coaches will secretly push kids NOT to play multiple sports, it's so refreshing to see a coach who encourages them to play multiple sports. I am a huge Brian Merrick fan!"
Dane Johnson, Head Football Coach, Corem Deo Academy
"Coach Merrick is the real deal! Even though he coaches basketball, he was a highly accomplished football player. He encourages his kids to participate in multiple sports and he attends their non-basketball events and cheers them on. He really cares about the kids first."
Josh Aleman, Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator, Sherman High School
