Confidentiality and The School Counselor

The counseling relationship between students and their school counselor requires an atmosphere of trust and confidence. School counselors work with both students and parents and our main focus is trust. Counselors will always inform students of any information that must be shared with parents. This always includes any threat to the students safety by themselves or someone else.

We focus on trust and we do that by ensuring students have a safe place to share their feelings. In middle school, it is important for students to feel they have independence from their parents. Counselors help maintain the delicate balance between students having a private life with cultivating a relationship with their parents.

Counselors belong to the American School Counselor Association and subscribe to their code of ethics. These standards dictate that counselors keep information confidential, unless disclosure is required to prevent imminent harm to the student or others or when legally necessary.
