The counseling relationship between students and their school counselor requires an atmosphere of trust and confidence. School counselors work with both students and parents. Our main focus is rapport building and trust. Counselors belong to the American School Counselor Association and subscribe to their code of ethics. Counselors will always inform students of any information that must be shared with parents and/or administration. This includes any concerns about the student harming themselves, harming others, or being harmed.
We do our best to ensure that students have a safe place to share their thoughts, opinions and feelings without criticism or judgment. In middle school, it is important for students to feel they have independence from their parents. Counselors help maintain the delicate balance between students having autonomy while cultivating a healthy relationship with their parents.
