Class Blog

Class Blog: April/May

This month, Primary 7 have been learning about Glasgow's architecture and social history. Pupils re-designed the Glasgow tenement and looked at ways that social housing could have been improved upon in the 19th century. As part of this context for learning, pupils performed short plays based on The Steamie and the Glasgow shipyards. Pupils have shown an astounding curiosity for the world around them through this topic- well done Primary 7b.

Nelson Mandela

Pupils learned about Nelson Mandela's relationship with the people of Glasgow. Here are Isla, Casey and Miraaya adding some information to our 'recall-wall'.

Textiles

Glasgow has a rich textile history. Pupils worked with Mr Keir to create simple cross-stitch designs. There may be some future fashion designers in our midst!

Design and Engineering

Primary 7b have been loving using our new Kapla box. We have used the blocks to create war ships and Glasgow tenements.

Science Fair

P7b have started working on their Science Fair experiment. Pupils have worked as part of a team to create an experiment involving bacteria. Have a look at some of our petri dishes above!

Book Reports

To show-off all of our great literacy learning, Primary 7 have been creating their own book reports. We analysed our chosen author's style and gave brilliant summaries of what we read.

Algebraic Reasoning

In Numeracy and Mathematics, pupils have been learning about how to simplify using like-terms. Here is a problem one of our pupils created using magnetic numbers/letters.

What will we learn next?

This is our final blog post! Primary 7b would like to thank you for taking such an active part in our learning this year. We have benefited hugely from your knowledge, and would like to say a special thank you to the parents who came in to speak to us this year.

Well done for all of your hard work this year, Primary 7b. I am immensely proud of you all- Miss McKendrick.

Class Blog: March

This month, Primary 7 have been learning about renewable and non-renewable energies and their impact on the environment. They have created fact-files and reports on fossil fuels and have begun creating their own model wind turbines. As part of this context for learning, pupils have been writing opinion pieces and participating on debates around the use of fossil fuels. There have been some seriously impressive pieces of work produced within this context, perhaps the next Greta Thunberg will come from Primary 7 Bravo!

Perfect Polygons

Edison have been looking at 3D objects and 2D shapes. They have been analysing the properties of the shapes and solving/creating word problems to test their knowledge.

Artist study: Andrew Cooper

Our artist of the month is Andrew Cooper, an environmental artist who uses bold colours to create eco-murals in Los Angeles. The pupils had a go at creating their own pieces of Cooper-inspired art.

Chance and Uncertainty

Here, Einstein are creating their own experiments to showcase their knowledge of chance and uncertainty. They calculated the odds of particular outcomes and had other pupils test out their predictions.

Modern Languages

Primary 7b have been continuing their French journey by learning about sports, hobbies and leisure time. They have begun creating short paragraphs about their hobbies and are developing their confidence in reading aloud in French.

Science

As part of their context for learning, pupils have been learning about renewable energies. They have begun gathering statistics to better understand the impact fossil fuels have on the environment.

What will we learn next?

Our next context for learning will be the Scotland's History and Textiles. Pupils will learn about the production of the Macintosh coat and its links to the Scottish textile trade. To complement their learning, they will learn about different materials in science and try to create their own impermeable fabrics. If you have a passion for fashion and would like to get involved with this project, please contact the school office.

Class Blog: February

This month, Primary 7 have chosen to learn about how the plague spread from London to the rest of Britain. Through this context, they have been learning to place events in chronological order and explain the importance of British Historical events such as the Great Fire of London. We have also had some impressive drama performances based on historical village of Eyam!

Literacy

Pupils have been reading the novel 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. They have been exploring how author's may use a certain writing style to engage their audience. Here is Jackson, Ali and Ashar completing a 'silent write' task on the character of Stanley.

Health and Wellbeing

This month saw the class participate in Children's Mental Health week. As part of this, pupils learned about Vincent Van Gogh and his relationship with nature and happiness. They then had a go at drawing their emotions through some wellbeing art. Here is Sofia having a go with some watercolours.

Expressive Arts

As part of our plague context. Pupils created scripted pieces of drama, in which they sustained roles and used their voices and body language to convey particular emotions. Here we have Girish, Ellie and Sophie striking a pose!

Numeracy and Mathematics

Edison have recently been learning about algebraic expressions. Einstein have also enjoyed learning about data handling through the creation of their own pie charts. Da Vinci have been doing some pretty tricky number work. Well done everyone!

Writing

As part of our novel study, pupils have been learning to write informal letters that include descriptions of emotions and events. Here, Lauren is writing a letter from the perspective of our main character.

Reading

To better understand the concept of characterisation, pupils created 'Role on the Wall' examples of their favourite characters. Using information from the text to support their ideas, pupils drew and described Stanley, Mr Sir and Mr Pendanski with great success.

What will we learn next?

Our next context for learning will be the Sustainable Development Goals. Pupils will have the chance to create their floating farm prototypes, design an eco-friendly housing development and engage in article writing in literacy. If you have anything you would like to share with the class regarding The Global Goals, please get in touch with the school office.

Class Blog: January

This month, Primary 7 have chosen to learn about the history of the USA. We have been researching colonial America and finding out about how people lived from the 1500s to the 1700s. We have also been looking at the work of American artist, Edward Hopper, and started our new novel study, 'Holes' by Louis Sachar.

Health and Wellbeing

This month, P7b have been learning about Substance Misuse. They have looked at the legal, social and health implications of abusing drugs and alcohol and created short scripted dramas on the subject of peer pressure. (Above: A snapshot from one of our performances!)

Literacy

This month saw pupils given an opportunity to show off their skills across Reading, Writing and Talking and Listening. Each pupil was given the freedom to choose a topic for their Personal Project and we saw a real range of areas covered during their presentations on Monday. From Colour Theory to the history of Walt Disney, P7b has got you covered. We have also begun reading our new novel, 'Holes' by Louis Sachar.

Numeracy and Maths

This month, some of our pupils have been learning about scale drawing and scale factors. To showcase their understanding, they created scale drawings of landmarks around the world. Some of our groups also revised time as well as BODMAS (always a favourite!)

What will we learn next?

Pupils have chosen 'The Plague in Britain' as their next Context for Learning. They will read diary entries from people from different societal backgrounds and create timelines which show important historical landmarks in medical history. If you have anything you think you would like to contribute to this context, please reach out to the school office.

Class Blog: December

This month, Primary 7 have embarked upon their class enterprise and have succeeded in raising lots of money which will go towards their Leavers' activities (not long now!). They have also been working on a mini-topic on Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' through which they have developed their debating skills, analysed texts and created very theatrical pieces of scripted drama.

Reindeer food, anyone?

This month, many of our learning experiences have centred around our class enterprise. We have looked at profit and loss, budgeting and 'Greenwashing' . We have particularly enjoyed analysing data to determine when companies are trying to mislead us. Our business has made nearly £200 so-far and our pupils have honed their skills in persuasion...watch out, Mum and Dad!

Greenwashing

Our pupils each chose a company to analyse and determined to what extent they were 'Greenwashing', this is when a company pretends to be eco-friendly when in reality they are creating misleading data. Pupils created their own, reliable charts to showcase the true extent of their environmental impact. Impressive work!

Scrooge is here!

Bah! Humbug!

Our Primary 7s have been learning about Charles Dickens' famous Victorian novel. They created scripted dramas and debated whether Scrooge was a bad man, or simply misunderstood. The jury is still out on that one- but there were some fabulous performances from our talented P7s.

What will we learn next?

Our next context for learning will be a country study on the United States. Some of our children are from, or have lived in America and are excited to share aspects of American life with us. We will look at their political systems, history and current social landscape. If you would be interested in helping us by coming in to talk to the class about the USA, please contact the school office!

Class Blog: November

This month, Primary 7 have begun reading their class novel 'Chill' by Alex Nye. We have created dioramas to showcase our awareness of the setting and crafted short dramas to develop our knowledge of characterisation. We were also joined by Miss Sajjad this month, who taught us lots about Islam, Health and Wellbeing and the Jacobites. Scroll down to see us hard at work.

Literacy: Setting and Characterisation

Writing

To develop our descriptive language, we have been creating a range of settings including: a haunted house, a day in Ancient Greece and a war scene. The pupils have also been developing their skills in non-fiction writing by researching the Battle of Sheriffmuir and the Jacobite rebellion.

Reading

In class, we have been reading Alex Nye's Chill. This is a book with a very strong setting and we have enjoyed looking at this together. This month, we have also continued to work on using primary and secondary sources to take notes.

Talking and Listening

This month, we have begun making use of literature circles and reciprocal reading to develop our skills in talking about texts. We are beginning to ask more complex questions and use evidence to support our assertions.

Numeracy: Some excellent examples

Budgeting

Edison have been learning how to budget. They mapped out a year in the life of someone with a particular salary and worked out what they could afford. This will prepare them for our Enterprise which will begin soon.

Chance and Uncertainty

Pupils looked at chance and uncertainty in a range of contexts. They created experiments to showcase their learning and had a go at a digital dice challenge to test their skills.

Pupils creating their own chance experiments

What will we learn next?

Our next context for learning will be 'Global Business and Enterprise'. Pupils will look at how large companies are structured, and analyse their impact on the environment. They will then apply their skills through the running of our P7 enterprise. If you have experience in running or being part of  a business and would be happy to speak to the pupils, please contact Miss McKendrick via the school office.

Class Blog: September/October

(Written by Maya and Deshna!) Scroll down to see the amazing work we have been doing this month in P7b! This month our context for learning has been 'slavery'. In Literacy we have been focusing on Maya Angelou and spoken-word poetry. We have learned about how to express ourselves effectively using gesture and tone, and how to engage an audience when performing.

Literacy and English: Poetry

This month we have been looking at Maya Angelou's  poem "Still I Rise."  We wrote our own   "Still I rise" poems about topics such as sexism, racism and mental well being. This Friday (28th) we will also be hosting our own in-class Poetry Slam.

Henry's freedom box

In class, we have been reading Henry's freedom box. It is the true story of a man who escaped from slavery by stowing away in a box. We created short pieces of drama to showcase our understanding of the story and apply our knowledge of gesture and tone.

Numeracy and Mathematics

This block, learners have been learning about scale factors, fractions, multiplication and division. As a whole class, we took an enquiry-based approach to learning and applied our understanding of scale factor, measure and decimals in our 'Giant Investigation'

What will we learn next?

Our next interdisciplinary topic is centred around the novel 'Chill' by Alex Nye. This is a (child-friendly) horror story set in Scotland. Pupils have begun reading the book in class, analysing the characters and setting and creating their own diorama models to showcase their understanding of the novel so-far. We are hoping to have Alex Nye come to the class to deliver a short horror-writing input very soon...watch this space! If you have any experience working professionally as a writer and would like to contribute to this topic, please contact the office.

August 2022

Please scroll down to learn about all of the exciting experiences we have had in Primary 7 so-far. Our context for learning during this block is 'Democracy and Politics'

The Debating Chamber: Talking and Listening

This term, pupils have been utilising their skills in talkig and listening to take part in whole-class debates. So far, we have debated lots of hot topics such as 'Should everyone have the right to vote?' and 'Should parents have full control over their children'. The pupils have produced some impressive arguments are developing their confidence in talking and listening.

Our Class Democracy Book

As part of their home learning, pupils created slides to showcase their learning about democracy around the world. They chose a country and researched their democratic process using a range of sources.

Political Biographies

Pupils worked collaboratively to choose a notable political figure. They then created presentations to teach their peers about their chosen politician.  We will now be going on to apply our learning through our own House Captain campaigns.

Reading and Writing:

This term, our context for learning is 'Democracy'. To incorporate this into our literacy, we have been reading and evaluating persuasive writing and have crafted our own letters to Nicola Sturgeon. We have also begun our House Captain campaigns and have worked as part of a small team to create a persuasive manifesto.

Pictures below:

Creative poetry writing: Creating concrete poems in the shape of our favourite things. We used descriptive language to describe concepts, animals, people and feelings and made a creative wall display; An example of one of our pupils' campaign posters, showing an awareness of layout and graphics to engage and persuade their audience.

Numeracy and Mathematics

Since the start of term, pupils have been doing lots of hard work in Numeracy. They have been learning about the properties of 3D shapes, finding missing angles in a triangle and consolidating their knowledge of number and place value.

Project work: Expressive Arts and Engineering

The pupils in P7B have been studying the artist, Chila Burman, and have created self-portraits in her style. They are taking their learning further by creating models of the Tate Britain and re-styling it using elements of their own heritage, culture or interests.

Health and Wellbeing

In PE, pupils have been developing their skills in teamwork and communication through a variety of team games. We are developing our spacial awareness in basketball and are starting to score some impressive points. Go team Maidenhill!

Modern Languages

Pupils have been developing their knowledge of Mandarin through a series of games and paired speaking activities. We have enjoyed learning numbers, colours and introductions and are looking forward to working with our Virtual Exchange Teacher later in the year.

House Captaincy

Above right: Two of our pupils making their case to their houses through their campaign speeches. Well done to everyone who ran for House Captain, the results will be counted and revealed as soon as possible!

Where are we going next on our Learning Journey?

Pupils have chosen to examine the subject of slavery for their next learning context. We will be engaging with this complicated issue through poetry and oral narrative, and through our new class novel 'Henry's Freedom Box'. Pupils will have the opportunity to create their own scripted drama and performance poetry to develop their skills in Talking and Listening and Writing. If you would like to contribute anything to this topic, please reach out to the school office.
