Primary 6 is a fantastic opportunity for your child/children to become
increasingly independent. There is a huge focus this year for pupils to lead their own learning and to take responsibility for developing key skills which they can eventually transfer into the world of work. There are 3 main methods in which Primary 6 pupils learn, these being independent learning, paired work and group collaboration.
Children will be able to:
Work in partnership with others
Express themselves
Build their independence
Make sense of their experiences
Test out new knowledge
Develop new skills
Apply their skills in different contexts
Many stages in the school have begun integrating enquiry based activities into their daily learning. This allows children to learn the skill of prioritising their time and managing tasks for the day/week.
Our learning environment enables and encourages independent learners, who are engaged in a range of activities throughout the day. Each day pupils will take part in a variety of teacher and pupil led activities. We are very lucky at Carolside to have a wide range of digital technology resources to enhance pupils' learning experiences.
Pupils' independence will be encouraged through clearly labelled resources and a variety of different roles which they will fulfil for the week. For example, messengers, group leaders and monitors who are responsible for various jobs.
The wall displays are a balance of pupil work and teacher displays. We strive to ensure that every child has the chance to have their work on display to create a nurturing environment.
Curriculum for Excellence is a 3 - 18 skills based curriculum which is
designed to prepare your learners with skills for learning, skills for life and
skills for work.
In all stages of Primary school there are eight curriculum areas:
Expressive arts
Health and wellbeing
Languages (including English and modern languages)
Mathematics
Religious and moral education
Sciences
Social studies
Technologies
In Primary 6, pupils are encouraged to lead their own learning by choosing which topics they would like to explore each term. This means that every year the contexts for learning covered vary.
Learners continue to explore the Second Level Experiences and Outcomes (Es & Os) and are actively involved in choosing which Es & Os and skills they focus on at different points throughout the year.
The benefit from this style of learning is that it allows for many curricular areas to be integrated into a context for learning. It also allows for greater flexibility if pupils wish to take the learning in a different direction. Digital resources are widely used when covering different contexts for learning and additional homework tasks may be issued via Google Classroom linked to the topic.
Some of the contexts for learning covered previously in Primary 6 included: Japan, Scottish Wars of Independence, Ancient Egypt, The Rainforest and Myths and Legends.
