In Primary 5, our pupils will learn in an enquiry-based classroom. The classroom environment will be structured in order to facilitate a wide range of learning experiences. Within the classroom, children will have their own tray, however, the seating arrangements will be flexible and children will have the opportunity to work in different areas that best suit the needs of their tasks. Children will be encouraged to take responsibility for the resources around the classroom.
Our learning environment enables and encourages independent learners, who are engaged in a range of activities throughout the day.
The wall displays are a balance of pupil work and learning displays. We strive to ensure that every child has the chance to have their work on display to create a nurturing environment.
Primary 5 is a fantastic opportunity for your child/children to become increasingly independent. There is a huge focus this year on pupils leading their own learning and taking responsibility for developing key skills which they can eventually transfer into the world of work. Each day, pupils will take part in a variety of teacher-led, teacher-initiated and pupil-led activities. Children will take part in a range of independent learning, paired work and group collaboration. There are also opportunities for children to learn in different ways to suit visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners.
Learning in these ways, children will be able to:
Work in partnership with others
Express themselves
Build their independence
Make sense of their experiences
Test out new knowledge
Develop new skills
Apply their skills in different contexts
Curriculum for Excellence is a 3 -18 skills-based curriculum which is designed to prepare your learners with skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work. Learners begin to explore the Second Level Experiences and Outcomes (Es & Os) and are increasingly involved in choosing which Es & Os will be the focus at different points in the year, particularly within their context for learning.
In P5, just like in previous years pupils will be developing their skills in Reading, Writing and Talking and Listening.
Some activities may include:
Creative, functional and personal writing
Class novel studies
Close reading
Active spelling
Handwriting
Punctuation and Grammar
Through studying a range of topics in numeracy and maths, pupils will spend time consolidating their prior learning as well as building on this to develop a range of new skills. Pupils will learn through both practical and written activities.
Some areas pupils may focus on this year include:
Addition and subtraction using carrying and exchanging
Multiplication tables (and making links with division)
Time (digital and analogue)
Problem solving
Measure (length, weight and volume)
As in previous years, our Primary 5 pupils are encouraged to lead their own learning by choosing which contexts for learning they would like to explore each term.
We follow an interdisciplinary approach to planning these contexts for learning with pupils. This ensures that children have a chance to develop skills from across the curriculum whilst being motivated by the focus on a context of their choice.
Some contexts for learning that have been chosen by previous Primary 5 classes include: The Victorians, the Titanic, The Big Schools Birdwatch, Australia, The Rainforest, Animals, Myths and Legends and Natural Disasters.
